About This Cause

The Kauai Humane Society, founded in 1952, is a privately funded, non-profit organization dedicated to the humane treatment of all animals and strengthening the human-animal bond. Originally established to provide for the care of stray and homeless animals, the mission of the humane society has broadened to ensure the humane treatment and improve the quality of life for all animals. During our years of service to the island of Kauai our programs and services have expanded to meet the needs of the community. We now provide: * Quality shelter and veterinary care for lost and unwanted animals; * Animal adoptions; * Lost and found pet services; * Low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to encourage a reduction in the population of unwanted animals; * Low-cost vaccines and microchipping; * Humane education programs designed to teach children and adults about responsible animal care, local wildlife, endangered species and animal welfare issues; * Animal protection, through a contract with the County of Kauai, rescue services and animal control enforcement; * Cruelty investigations; * Gomez’ Galley, our pet food bank program; * End of life services / private cremation services; * A myriad of volunteer opportunities; * Blooming Tails Resale Shop located in Puhi * Community Care Center - offering preventative care and treatment of conditions that are non-life threatening. Proudly sponsored in part by PetSmart Charities. Each year approximately 3,000 animals enter the Kauai Humane Society’s doors. We are an open-admission shelter, turning no animal away. Kauai Island covers 562 square miles and has a population of approximately 72,000 people. To adequately serve the human and non-human residents of the island KHS employs over 40 employees and we enjoy the support of more than 300 volunteers. The organization is administered by an Executive Director, who reports to a volunteer board of directors. Support for the programs and services offered by KHS is derived from a variety of sources, including charitable contributions from hundreds of members and donors, direct mail appeals, special events, memorial and honorary giving programs, corporate and foundation solicitations, bequests and Blooming Tails, our resale shop. In addition, a portion of our budget is funded with very specific constraints through a contract with the County of Kauai to provide animal control services.
