Mission Statement
Mission. To create and maintain the finest submarine memorial in the World, to include a display of submarine related artifacts, and a Park and to support the Navy as appropriate – operating on a fiscally sound basis. Purpose. To establish a Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum to serve as a memorial to those gallant Sailors who manned the Submarine Force in WWII, during the Cold War, today and into the future; to maintain as a centerpiece of this memorial museum the Fleet Submarine USS BOWFIN (SS 287), for permanent display in Hawaii, as an educational tool and as an inspiration to present and future generations; to create an Educational Outreach Program within the Community including an endowed Bowfin Scholarship Program; and be a centerpiece for public awareness and understanding of the Submarine Force including its evolution, history and future.
About This Cause
The Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association (PFSMA) is an IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization formed in 1978. PFSMA was created with the express purpose of preserving and sharing the stories of submarine veterans. Due to the secretive nature of submarine warfare and the advanced technologies employed, the stories of submarine veterans are at great risk of being lost to history. As one of few submarine museums in the nation, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park is in a unique and indispensable position to give a voice to the U.S. Navy’s Silent Service. In 1979, USS Bowfin (SS-287) was donated to PFSMA. In 1981, Bowfin was opened to the public at her mooring in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In 1986, USS Bowfin was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. In 1988, construction was completed on facilities that included a 10,000 square foot museum, gift shop, shaded lanai, comfort station and office. The Navy transferred artifacts that had been on display in a museum on base in order for them to be more accessible to the public. Since opening to the public, more than 9.5 million visitors have toured our campus and Bowfin.
