H U G S FOR HAWAIIS SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

HONOLULU, Hawaii, 96816-2318 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to strengthen Hawaii’s families and improve their quality of life as they face the emotional and financial hardships of caring for a seriously ill child.

About This Cause

Established in 1982, HUGS helps nearly 400 Hawaii families each year by fostering peer support, strengthen coping abilities and family relationships, and working to alleviate the emotional and financial burden of caring for child with a life threatening illness. It is the only organization of its kind in Hawaii which provides comprehensive, long-term services for families whose children (age birth to 21 years old) suffer from widely diverse illnesses, ranging from leukemia to liver ailments to extremely rare diseases. HUGS programs and services are uniquely designed to provide ongoing support for each family member as well as the entire family unit, from initial diagnosis and medical treatment to remission, or loss, a process that lasts as long as 5-10 years or more. Programs include: 1) Peer support activities through family events, night out events for moms only and dads only, and teens; 2) Monthly and Emergency Respite; 3) Hospital Visitations at Kapiolani Medical Center, Tripler Medical Center and Kaiser Medical Center; 4) Financial Assistance for emergency airfare for medical treatment, emergency food or funeral assistance; and 5) Sibling Support activities for siblings of ill children who are often ‘forgotten’.
