Mission Statement

There are many misconceptions and fears around death, and these commonly become barriers preventing people from getting care that maximizes comfort and dignity, and honors their beliefs and values, and embraces the mystery of dying. At Hospice Maui, we see ourselves as stewards of an essential truth that is both disquieting and little-known: that death has the power to enrich our lives and our communities more profoundly than any other single experience. We see it as incumbent upon us in our leadership role to re-educate our community about this. To help us do that, we have defined the difference between our "work" and our "deeper purpose." Our work is providing physical comfort and emotional and spiritual support for people who are terminally ill, and supporting and assisting their families, before the death and while they are grieving, thus helping them make the most of the singular opportunities that the dying process creates. Our Deeper Purpose is to enrich our community by helping people discover the gifts that preparing for the death of a loved one can bring: Compassion, Insight, Courage, Humility, Inspiration, Confidence, and Growth. Our Success flows from our staff: From their willingness to see, hear, and feel the pain they are witnessing; and from their being stewards and ambassadors of our mission in a way that embraces the depth of mystery at the center of dying.

About This Cause

Founded in 1981 on Maui, we are stewards of a sacred trust: To provide the highest level of professional, ethical, culturally appropriate, and deeply compassionate care to our diverse community. Hospice Maui cares for Maui’s seriously ill residents in their homes and in the Hospice Maui Hale. We provide, without charge to those without insurance and who cannot afford it, whatever is needed for that care. In addition, we do our work in a way that exceeds the highest standards of hospice care. Because of these two factors, our care typically costs more than the insurance coverage. It is through the generosity of our many contributors that we are able to maintain our exceptional hospice care program, year in and year out. Throughout our 40-year history we have enjoyed tremendous community support, and that is what ensures that we can continue to provide the exceptional standard of our hospice services. We are a 501c(3) charitable organization, and your gifts are fully tax deductible as permitted by law. Hospice Maui is also a Maui United Way Agency, and a recipient of funds from the Pacific Area Combined Federal Campaign. Donations to both of these entities can be designated to Hospice Maui. Below are categories of funds in which donations support: *Hospice Maui Kokua Fund - provides payment for Hale Room & Board for those without the ability to pay. *Funeral Support - assistance with cremation. *Flights to Sister Islands - allows our staff to support and service patients who live on our sister islands of Molokai and Lanai. *Staff Support - donations help purchase the necessary educational equipment for our staff. *Campus Improvement - and much, much more! Our heartfelt thanks for your generosity!
