Mission Statement
Based on the personal experiences and testimony of parents, doctors, nurses, social workers, and other NPOs, in 1982, work began on an affordable, temporary "home-away-from-home" in Honolulu for the families of children hospitalized with serious illnesses. To develop this and other programs and partnerships aimed at improving the lives of children in Hawaii and the Pacific who otherwise might find inadequate support, RMHC-HI today operates three facilities for families and patients to support those compelled to fly to Oahu for medical treatments not available on their home island. Much of its success can be credited to the community, beyond monetary contributions but also for the thousands of hours of personal time given by hundreds of committed RMHC-HI volunteers. Ronald McDonald, a trusted friend to children across the Globe, who represents happiness, fun and a positive outlook on life is the namesake of the Charity for within the walls of RMHC core programs is a safe haven filled with hope and love.
About This Cause
When serious illness or injury strikes a child and is hospitalized, a family’s entire world turns upside down. While many of the child-patients are being treated for birth-related conditions, the House also supports families whose children are fighting cancer, heart problems, organ failure, major physical trauma, and other life–threatening conditions. Our “Cornerstone” Program Honolulu’s two Ronald McDonald Houses (RMH) are in continual operation 24-hours, 365-day-a-year. The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Honolulu in March, 1987. Each is a “home-away-from-home” for families that must come to Oahu seeking specialized medical treatments for their children’s catastrophic illnesses. RMH keeps families together during this, the most trying of times. Both of our Houses provide a warm, dignified and supportive environment for our families, and are located in lower Manoa Valley, near Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children and Shriners Hospital. Every year, the original RMH on Judd Hillside and RMH on Oahu Avenue provide lodging for Guest families from many different cultures throughout the Pacific Basin. They bring with them their traditions, languages and values to share with each other and the staff. Just over three-fourths of the families served come from the neighbor islands. Most others are from Guam and other Pacific Rim locations. The individual stories of the children and families who come to Ronald McDonald House continue to touch our hearts and inspire us with their courage and hope. While on Oahu for a child’s medical treatments, families may stay at a Ronald McDonald House and receive comfortable and secure accommodations that include a fully-stocked kitchen, pantry and laundry room. They are also provided with transportation to and from hospitals; Internet access; and their own cell phone to use while they are staying at the House. •RMH-Judd Hillside is for families with children receiving outpatient treatments or those traveling with siblings of the patient. It has served thousands of families since opening in 1987. •RMH-Oahu Avenue is for adult family members of children receiving in-patient care and for neighbor island women experiencing “high-risk” pregnancies. It began serving families in 2006. •About 60% of families have a child receiving in-patient treatment and 40% outpatient treatment. On average, two-thirds of the patients are under 5-years-old. •While the majority of child-patients are being treated for birth-related conditions, the House also supports many families whose children are fighting cancer, heart problems or major physical trauma. •Through its Ronald McDonald House program, RMHC-HI helps approximately 400 families each year. That is about 950 individuals.
