Mission Statement

The objectives of Fo Guang Shan Hawaii are to foster peace and harmony among all peoples of the world through wisdom, compassion, peace, happiness, and harmony. This effort is achieved by our positive presence in the local community , by working to enhance the vitality of our neighborhood, and by providing educational opportunities, cultural events, and community service to everyone. Education of self-healing, meditation, volunteerism, life application of our teachings to the environment and more will foster a better society for today and tomorrow.

About This Cause

Funds will continue to subsidize and support the Fo Guang Shan’s activities (FGS Hawaii) in our outreach community programs.... I. Cross cultural exchange between the East-West in various subject areas (language learning and cultural understanding) A. FGS Hawaii has sponsored arts and cultural events to Hawaii’s community such as the musical zither concert, paper-cutting demonstration, and calligraphy/ watercolor painting exhibitions. Funds are partially spent to support the artists’ performances as they introduced the ancient lost arts. Opportunities for hands-on workshops, demonstrations, and dialogues with the artists offer a deeper cultural understanding. We anticipate to sponsor future cultural events to the public! B. Meditation classes offer to the community assist in the development of well-balanced bodies physically, mentally, and spiritually. In addition, group sharing of daily lives also provide positive healing during such challenging times. Funds are spent on the implementation of the programs for group activities, educational literature, technological software, materials/supplies, and guest speakers. C. Sharing experiences with peoples of diverse backgrounds and providing vital assistance from our and other available sources to the needy are mechanisms to outreach especially during the pandemic, natural disasters, and social difficult times. Funds will assist people not only with their basic daily necessities such as clothes, toiletries, and other commodities but also for emotional support via listening, communication, and emotional sharing. D. Educating the community of the benefits eating a balanced diet with a vegetarian meals. Fo Guang Shan Hawaii introduced to Hawaii’s community another healthy alternative. It is very challenging to maintain this program during such times! II.-To support the community organizations A. The sewing of cloth masks and knitting of scarves, gloves, and such items were distributed to elderly hospitals, health groups, and low income public schools in Hawaii. In addition, N-95 masks and Medical masks were given to the essential workers. We also anticipate to assist the community in the near future as the need arises! B. Members donated clothes, basic household products, school supplies, and more to the Hawaii’s at risk communities. We would like to distribute to other organizations especially when the natural calamities and disasters have unexpectedly hit the other Hawaiian islands. A few years ago, FGS Hawaii supported Kauai’s rainstorm and Big Island’s volcano relief missions. C. Ongoing imminent community projects will arise during these upcoming months and FGS Hawaii will definitely support these endeavors.
