Mission Statement

Pu`uwa canoe club isi an all-volunteer Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Club providing Paddling Programs open to all on the island of Kauai in the State of Hawaii. We have no paid staff but do pay an accountant to keep our books.

About This Cause

Hui O Mana Ka Puuwai Outrigger Canoe Club has been serving the Kawaihau District on the island of Kauai since 1990. We provide equipment, coaching and location to multiple adults and youth Outrigger paddling programs. We are the host organization for Kapa`a High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Outrigger Canoe Paddling Teams as well as their ROTC program approximately 20 years. We also hold a Spring and Summer Youth Program ages 7 to 14. Our site and much of our equipment was recently destroyed in a tremendous flood at the Wailua River. To give you an idea of the force of the flood the Wailua River Bridge has been closed to traffic until further notice Puuwai is an all volunteer organization with 27 volunteers comprising our operations such as our of the Board of Directors, officers, coaches, and assistant coaches. We have no paid employees. But now the amount of work required to reestablish our club as a viable supporter of our community will require more than just the service of volunteers. Annually our youth programs works with over 200 youth a year, programs are held in different seasons as each program utilizes all our present existing canoes, paddles and coaching staff. Program meets 3 or 4 times a week for a total of 14 hours of high intensity training and racing. Female participation in this sport is high. Females’ holding high rank as paddlers and coaches is the norm. Ages 7 years – 12 years Ages 13 years – 18 years Program ages 8-13 50% boys 50% girls Program ages 14-17 45% boys 55% girls We are fortunate to have coaches who love the program, love the work, and have run our youth programs for 15 years. I have been part of this program for 20 years and we have coaches and BOD, and club founders who have been active in this club for 30 years. They understand that first discipline and order is fundamental to providing youth with a sense of place and an atmosphere in which they can learn. Pu`uwai canoe club has hosted program since 1990 and has developed a deep friendship within the surrounding community. We promote our programs with signs on the road, articles in the newspaper, emails to past participants as well as inserting postcard flyers into mailboxes. Pu’uwai Annual Programs, Many of Which Run Simultaneously at Different Times of the Day (ed. August 17, 2016) Pu’uwai Canoe Club has been running Adult, Children and Programs for persons with disability since 1990. October 16 to February 1: Off Season Training, casual practices twice a week
