Mission Statement

Nā Kālai Waʻa (NKW) is a non-profit 501c-3 education based organization whose mission is to protect, perpetuate and honor the Hawaiian traditions and practices of waʻa (canoe) culture through the Makaliʻi voyaging canoe and related programs, for the past, present, and future generations. Our vision, "He waʻa he moku, he moku he waʻa" simply translates to "The canoe is our island, and the island is our canoe." Our vision explains the unique holistic nature of voyaging practices, and how they relate to all of us individually and as a larger cohesive community. If we can survive together on a canoe, we can thrive together in our island communities.

About This Cause

Nā Kālai Waʻa provides opportunities for individuals to be the most outstanding community voyagers; individuals who are voyage ready on land like crew-members on the canoe. It takes diligence to be voyage ready, to 1. Always be prepared; 2. be contentious of others; 3. be safety conscious; 4. live sustainable practices; 5. live the values of Aloha (to show compassion and love), Mālama (to care for) and ʻOhana (healthy familial relations) . By doing so, we see that we also develop responsible and integral community citizens who perpetuate these values of waʻa (canoe) culture.
