Mission Statement
Breaking Barriers Foundation aims to empower and uplift African individuals in Washington by providing equitable access to quality STEM and Nursing education. Through outreach, mentorship programs, and scholarships, we aim to foster a supportive environment that promotes innovation, inclusivity, and academic excellence.
About This Cause
Breaking Barriers Foundation is an organization deeply rooted in community outreach efforts aimed at encouraging more African individuals to pursue careers in STEM and Nursing. We recognize the importance of representation and access to opportunities in these fields, especially for marginalized communities, and we have developed comprehensive programs to address these needs. One of the cornerstones of our outreach efforts is the hosting of events specifically designed to showcase career opportunities available in STEM and healthcare fields. These events serve as platforms for dialogue and inspiration, featuring panelists from diverse backgrounds who share their personal experiences and insights into various STEM and healthcare careers. By providing tangible examples of success and highlighting the potential for growth and impact in these fields, we aim to ignite a passion for exploration and discovery among African youth. In addition to hosting events, we prioritize mentorship as a vital component of our program. We pair students with mentors who are professionals in STEM or healthcare fields, providing them with guidance, support, and valuable networking opportunities. These mentorship relationships foster a sense of belonging and empowerment, as students receive personalized advice and encouragement from individuals who understand their cultural background and share similar career aspirations. We recognize that financial barriers often hinder access to higher education for many African individuals. To address this challenge, we offer scholarships to students who participate in our program and demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to pursuing careers in STEM or Nursing. These scholarships not only alleviate financial burdens but also serve as a tangible investment in the future success of our participants. Each member of our board has a unique career journey that began at the community college level and progressed to higher education. Some of us transferred to the University of Washington, while others pursued different paths. This shared experience of starting our academic journey at community colleges allows us to better understand and connect with the individuals we serve. Our leadership team is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within our organization, where all voices are heard and valued. We believe that diversity strengthens our ability to achieve our mission and make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve. Through our collective efforts and diverse perspectives, we are dedicated to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for African individuals to thrive in STEM and Nursing careers.
