Mission Statement
Empowerment Through Action (ETA) is a program that supports over 200 of Hillsdale’s historically underserved students. The program consists of wellness groups, tutoring, enrichment activities, job and career training, parent education, community closet, and a food pantry. The mission of ETA, launched in the Spring of 2018, is to close the opportunity gap and foster belonging for our students to enhance achievement in the following areas: social and emotional growth, academic growth, development of self-confidence and inner capital, social connection, and job and internship placement.
About This Cause
Empowerment Through Action (ETA) consists of a series of empowering actions to help close that achievement gap for students in high school. The program works to close the achievement gap with each offering: ETA Groups: Thanks to our generous donors, we have thirty groups with over 270 students at Hillsdale in the 2023-2024 School Year! ETA Groups meet three times a month for forty-five minutes and support students’ social and emotional health with a trauma literacy and restorative practice lens. The groups focus on team building, gratitude practices, academic goal setting, personal growth, and community building. Job Related Support: The ETA Program provides individualized, job-related support for students from research, to resume creation, to application completion, to interview training, and finally all post-placement concerns such as advocating for raises and management concerns. We all know how fulfilling it is to begin a job and have that sense of accomplishment and independence, in addition to how integral it can be to build an adolescent sense of self- capital and preparedness as they head off to their next adventure once they leave our campus. ETA RISE: The ETA Community Resource Center (CRC) is open Monday through Thursday until 5 p.m. for tutoring and other academic support. The ETA’sCRC provides access to two professional tutors, four days a week to support our students’ learning. With the organization from our Lead Tutor and Student Success Coordinator and donor funds, we can work towards closing the opportunity gap and give our students direction to help them find their greatness. ETA Bridge to Bridge Program: ETA Bridge to Bridge focuses on grade 8.5 and grade 12.5 models where ETA facilitates these two critical educational and social transitions post-pandemic that we recognize - now more than ever - were severely impacted. For the 8.5 model, with assistance from Abbott Middle School, 32 students are selected and placed in groups that met once a week during their final semester in middle school and will continue for their next four years at HHS. They attended a three-day ETA Summer Bridge Camp, and participated in bimonthly meetings to address academic and personal concerns during their first high school semester. The 12.5 model was founded in partnership with College of San Mateo, where we worked to provide 12th graders with resources to plan and prepare for their first year of college. ETA Enrichment Activities - Building Our Community: Soccer League: With donations from the San Mateo Police Activities League (SMPAL) and others, we were able to launch a soccer league for our Multilingual Learner students, where they are able to compete against other schools and really become a part of our community. Basketball League: We also launched a four-team basketball league (The Peninsula Classic) that plays against other teams in the District and was created in the spirit of Building our Community. DJing Class: With renowned DJ/Producer Anthony Gomez, ETA students are learning how to find their own rhythm! Entrepreneurship: Lifestyle Clothing Brand: Students, with the help of staff, our currently working on the launch of their lifestyle clothing brand - Estimated Time of Arrival. We have weekly meetings on the ins and outs of clothing and website design, advertising, and small businesses. CRC Cafe: ETA students are running their own businesses and help run Hillsdale’s CRC Cafe, which sells coffee to our staff in our Community Resource Center.
