About This Cause

Medical Center Barbour (MCB) is a Critical Access Hospital in the southern rural areas of Alabama, and is designated as a rural underserved county. MCB is located 50 miles from another hospital. The hospital functions with 25 acute beds, a 10 bed Geri Psych unit, a 7 bed Emergency Room and offers all aspects of healthcare, including general surgery, inpatient ICU and general medical, inpatient rehabilitation (swingbed), and outpatient services, routine radiology, nuclear medicine, mammography, ultrasound, cardiopulmonary, and full laboratory services. We see an average of more than 16,000 ER visits annually, 33,000 patients registered, 143,000 lab tests, 24,000 radiology procedures, and in excess of 10,000 clinic visits annually. 42% of our patients are Medicare, 30% Medicaid, appx 18% commercial, and 11% bad debt (self-pay) and run uncompensated care of approximately $530,000 each quarter. We have approximately 230 employees that live here and depend on this facility as their support, often sole source income for their families. Since COVID, nursing and other professional salaries have increased by demand in excess of 28%. MCB struggles to keep up with other area facilities on salaries and are challenged to maintain nursing and other licensed staff. Just a lot of competition. Supply expense increased as well, partially due to demand, but have never leveled off since COVID. Following the COVID era, MCB ended up approximately $6 million in debt to vendors that could not be paid timely, a large portion of that being prior to January 2022. Some of this has carried forward to today. We are not asking for an easy way out, we are looking forward to a future of caring for our patients and community in a manner they deserve. We are caring for our families, friends, neighbors, folks we sit next to in church, or at our children's sports activities, and we are caring for employees of other businesses in our community, so they can be productive and successful in their jobs. We survive because we know that our community depends on us, on locality to save lives EVERYDAY, that due to the socioeconomic levels in a large percentage of our patients cannot afford, or do not have financial or physical means to travel for healthcare. It is so important that our hospital remains open, solvent, and even growing, to maintain healthcare needed to serve our community. Saving lives is the most important purpose of MCB, however, we well realize that a community without a hospital does not encourage economic development and business growth. We cannot be without healthcare in this great community. So it is with much sincerity and humble request that our hospital is considered for assistance through your organization. We know our purpose and see a path forward for sustainability, we just need assistance to get us through a financial state that so many rural hospitals are dealing with today.
