The Columbia Neighborhood Center supports and empowers youth and families so that the children of the community will develop the life skills necessary to be successful in school and beyond.
About This Cause
Columbia Neighborhood Center (CNC) is a collaboration between the Sunnyvale School District and the City of Sunnyvale as well as non-profit organizations, businesses, community members and others. The Center coordinates these entities to provide a connected network of services and programs in the areas of: Community Education, Mental Health Services, Health Care, Recreation, and Youth and Neighborhood Safety. The Center and its partners also promote a strong community through events and activities for the neighborhood. Most of the services currently offered at CNC have been available at other sites throughout the county, and many of the services had been offered only at the respective agency headquarters. CNC services are largely offered by agencies’ staff, repositioned to the Columbia site, and do not require additional agency funding or City support aside from physical space for the providers. Among the services offered are after school recreation programs (classes, sports and activities), adult education (English as a Second Language classes, computer training for adults, and health/wellness classes), social services such as counseling, parenting workshops, legal counseling, food distribution and health services. Services are available to all neighborhood residents regardless of ability to pay. The essential elements of CNC include a focus on the neighborhood itself as a whole community, and a recognition that students and their families live in an environment that extends well beyond the school itself. The CNC is clearly oriented to prevention and early intervention to successfully keep problems, such as truancy or youth-related crime, manageable within the community.
