About This Cause
The Ward 7 Food Center of Peace Lutheran Church is an Outreach Ministry that serves under Peace Lutheran Church. Peace Lutheran Church is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are located in the far northeast corner of Washington DC and have been providing food since 1962. We serve clients in the Ward 7 area as well as family and friends of Peace Lutheran Church. We are blessed to be able to provide food on the campus of Peace Lutheran Church Monday through Thursday during the hours of 10:30am and 2:00pm. We are closed Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and all federal Holidays. To be sure that we can assist clients and for safety reasons, we do not accept walk-ins. Instead, we ask to be contacted to schedule an appointment before coming to pick up food. This allows us to provide individual clients with quality and individual attention. Our building is not handicapped accessible, thus we are unable to deliver food. We do not provide transportation, carfare, or money to our clients. However, we will work with the client's health aide to provide emergency food assistance. The Ward 7 Food Center makes available emergency food assistance that provides nourishment to families of various sizes covering a two-day timeframe in the form of two meals per day. To meet the short-term hunger needs of families, provisions include non-perishable food, frozen meats, vegetables, and fresh fruits and produce, when available. We provide emergency food assistance to families who are struggling with food needs. Our clients come from the Capital Area Food Bank, Hunger Lifeline, Social Services Agency, members of Peace Lutheran Church, and we are listed with the Aunt Bertha website. Currently, the Ward 7 area is in a food desert, leaving the corner stores the only access for clients to shop. The quality of food and service is poor. During 2016, the women of Peace Lutheran Church stepped out on faith to build and begin to foster a relationship with the residents of Carver Senior Apartments, which is located very near the Food Center. During these visits, when funds are available, we provide emergency assistance by giving them a bag of cereal and fresh fruits. We would like to carry on the fostering process by continuing to provide food to the residents at the Carver Senior Apartments. In 2018 and 2019, we were able to provide quarterly free mini markets that were open to all Ward 7 households. Families could do client choice shopping for non-perishable foods, meat and produce that were provided. Currently, the Ward 7 Food Center of Peace Lutheran Church is continuing to seek a variety ways that we can provide food that will help eliminate human food suffering while uplifting the condition of each person who comes through our doors. The need for emergency food assistance could be for a variety of reasons such as: a shortage of money, personal conflict, disease, or COVID-19. No matter the reason, we will assist them all.
