About This Cause
KML Church Food Pantry is a guest choice pantry serving primarily the homeless and poor, operating in a dedicated facility built by our congregation. We do not collect, keep or sell data on our guests. Guests do not have to provide identification to access the pantry. Nutritious food choices including frozen or canned meat, fresh and canned vegetables, fruit, dairy, bread and cereal are offered. We also offer hygiene products including toilet paper, toothbrushes and paste, and soap. The Kountze Food Pantry is operated entirely by over 70 volunteers from various congregations, retirees, students, individuals, businesses and service organizations. In order to protect volunteers and guests, on March 16, 2020 the Kountze Food Pantry distribution was adjusted in response to the corona virus pandemic. Bags are now pre-filled with food items and distributed to guests at the door, reducing the number of people in a gathering. In 2019 the statistics for attendance were: 16,725 adults served (356 average per week). 4,326 children served (92 average per week). The weekly average of people served is 448. (Calculated over the 47 weeks the pantry was open in 2019). 11,650 households and 378 disabled individuals were served in 2019. 562 more people were served in 2019 compared to 2018 statistics. 2020 attendance statistics increased significantly. 14,423 households and 26,279 individuals were served. This is a 23% increase in households and 57% increase in individuals served. This increase is directly related to the food insecurity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Food Pantry is located in a facility attached to Kountze Memorial Church between Omaha’s midtown and downtown areas, and is surrounded by neighborhoods challenged by poverty and lack of easy access to resources and employment. Housing is a significant challenge in the area immediately surrounding Kountze, and homelessness is highly prevalent in the area. We are looking to secure $120,000 to be able to buy food for the 2021 year.
