About This Cause

The formation of the First African Baptist Church has been called, by some historians, one of the most important events in the history of our state. In June 1780, the Richmond Baptist Church was formed in a house at the corner of what are now Carrington and Pink Streets. The congregation consisted of whites, free blacks and enslaved black people. It is because of this, that both First African Baptist Church on the corner of Norwood and Hanes Ave. and First Baptist Church Monument Ave. claim the 1780 congregation as their beginnings. Dr. Rodney D. Waller is the anointed Senior Pastor of the First African Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia. He serves as the 10th Pastor of this historic church, the third oldest African American church in the United States. Dr. Waller has pastored at First African Baptist Church for eleven years. Under his leadership, the church has experienced tremendous growth in membership and ministry. He led the congregation in expanding its ministry through passionate worship and engaging in purposeful outreach.
