Mission Statement
Second Presbyterian: We exist to love God, ourselves and others — whoever, however and wherever they are — with a love that transforms us all. The Open Table: We believe in a community where everyone belongs, a city where all have the power to pursue their dreams and ambitions, and a people who are committed to each other’s liberation, until all are at the table together.
About This Cause
Second Presbyterian: At Second, our mission of loving God, ourselves and others guides us in all that we do. We live out this mission with a set of five core values: relationships, openness/inclusiveness, faith in action, spiritual growth, and risk taking. The Open Table KC: We believe in a community where everyone belongs, a city where all have the power to pursue their dreams and ambitions, and a people who are committed to each other’s liberation, until all are at the table together. At The Open Table KC, we create space for hospitality, conversation, peace, and reconciliation, and we root our theology in contemplation and liberation. Join us every second and fourth Sunday for food, music and conversation. Overcoming our divisions requires open dialogue from many voices, especially those who have historically not been invited to the table, and ones impacted the most by injustice. With that in mind, we curate spaces and experiences presenting new perspectives meant to challenge and inspire, letting us rediscover ourselves and experiment with new ways to engage with our world. God welcomes everyone to the table, no matter where you’re from, what you practice, your race, economic status or sexual orientation. In response to God’s extravagant welcome, our hospitality extends to all. As a church community we work to be actively anti-racist and affirming to people who are LGBTQIA. Additionally, The Open Table Antiracism Trainings provides trainings about racism and organizing, creating a space for dialogue that addresses systemic racism and offers strategies and skills to challenge institutional barriers to equity. Our trainers have been trained by Tseng Development Group, an organization with over 20 years of experience in anti-racism curriculum development. All our trainings are interactive and facilitated by both trainers of color and white trainers.
