Mission Statement
No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here... That's the commitment of the United Church of Christ to every child of God and at St. John's we're working to practice what we preach. At St. John's we are actively trying to learn how to be THE church of Jesus Christ, not just a church building. We want to follow the leadership of Jesus and make the church a source of help and hope, justice and compassion, education and dialogue in the Lyons and surrounding communities. This is a time of change for St. John's and we invite you to join us on this comfort-busting, life-giving, spirit-growing, mind-opening journey of Christian faith. A Brief History of St. John's UCC The congregation of St. John’s United Church of Christ was organized in January, 1902 as St. Johanna’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Reverend Fred Luedeke as its first pastor. The Congregation soon became a member of the Evangelical Synod of North America, and then in 1934 it became a member of the Evangelical & Reformed Church. The constitution was revised in 1962 in recognition of the merger that had occurred earlier between the E & R Churches and the Congregational Christian Churches, thus becoming, officially, part of the United Church of Christ. A new church structure was started April 30, 1961, two blocks north of 47th Street on historic Route 66. The first service was held in the church’s present location on Palm Sunday in April 15, 1962. The United Church of Christ The St. John’s United Church of Christ is a member congregation of The United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination of approximately 1.3 million members worshiping in more than 6,000 churches. Our churches maintain, or are affiliated with, 30 colleges and institutions of higher education, 15 seminaries and more than 340 health and human service centers in every state and in Puerto Rico. As part of our UCC membership, the congregation is also part of the Illinois Conference, and the Chicago Metropolitan Association.
About This Cause
Currently, St. John’s UCC participates in the Churches of Lyons Food Pantry, gives to Heifer International and the Ronald McDonald House, and sponsors the Good Shepherd Fund, a fund dedicated to helping our members and local community friends in need. We also house the Community Learning Center, a computer lab facility. We are currently looking for volunteers to participate in teaching and organizing educational programs for the community. In the past, we have offered Word, email and Excel workshops, resume writing assistance and general tutoring for students of all ages. Worship Service starts at 10:30 AM CST. Our Sunday School starts at 10:30 as well. Sunday school begins in worship and continues to classes after the Prayers of the People. Children's sermons during worship happen every 2nd and 4th Sunday. We have classes for Age 3 thru Grade 6 and a staffed nursery for 0-2. Please Contact Us for more information.
