Mission Statement
The Mission of John Muir Elementary School (home of the Bobcat Scholars) is to create an environment where our students become independent learners and are empowered to excel academically and socially so they are prepared to make their mark on the world. We want our students to be excited to come to school and engage daily in rich, rigorous and relevant learning experiences and ask lots of questions. Every day at John Muir, we support culturally diverse, relevant learning experiences.
About This Cause
We are a small, urban elementary school located in the heart of San Francisco. We joyfully serve the cities most vulnerable youth. We believe in the following three tenets: Access and equity: Make social justice a reality by ensuring every student has access to high-quality teaching and learning. Student achievement: Create learning environments that foster highly engaged and joyful learners and that support every student reaching his or her potential. Accountability: Keep promises to students and families and enlist everyone in the community to join in doing so. We deeply believe in reimagining the school experience for black and brown youth in our community. We strive to listen to and use our students voices and experiences to shape our curriculum, lessons, and interactions with our students every day. Our teachers and support staff are an amazingly talented, dedicated group of professionals who meet weekly to plan and reflect on their teaching practices. Common Core standards are used to create learning spirals that integrate literacy, math, history, science, technology and social justice topics. As a staff we are also dedicated to examining the racial disparities in academia that many of our children of color are experiencing in the public school system. This means we are deeply reflective in our daily practice and belief systems and we set high expectations for all our scholars. We use Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by local educator and activist, Zaretta Hammond, to guide our lens in which we view our scholars an families. With this book as a guide, we discuss what roles culture, gender, race and trauma may play in shaping our scholar’s school experiences. We are reflective on our teaching and dedicated to closing the opportunity gap for our scholars. We consider families to be the first teachers of their children and our motto at John Muir is: “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.”
