About This Cause

Fairfield High School, Iowa, is a public high school in the Fairfield Community School District. There are approximately 520 students in grades 9 through 12. The student to teacher ratio is approximately 15:1. The student body is quite diverse, with some students from an international background. FHS has a strong base of core classes, as well as a wide variety of opportunities in the career-tech and fine arts programs. FHS would be considered a school with high technology usage, starting a 1:1 ratio of computer to students in January of 2017. Programs available to students include the Gifted and Talented, English as a Second Language (ESL), Advanced Placement, Concurrent Credit, Special Education, and a Career-Tech Program. There is an affiliated Career Academy in Business, Health Occupations, and Industrial Maintenance, co-sponsored with Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. The district also provides updated online learning software called E20/20. More rigorous course work that is aligned with the Iowa Core and additional student tutorials are a part of the new software package. This software will be helpful in providing additional online learning opportunities and more chances for credit recovery. An Opportunity Center is available for students who prefer a non-traditional school setting. There are many activities available for students. There are athletic opportunities such as football, baseball, basketball, soccer, track, golf, bowling and cross country. Cheerleading and dance and drill opportunities are also offered. Fine art options include many choirs, ensembles, band, and smaller band groups such as jazz band. Theater and drama are also available to students. Fairfield HIgh School is known for very high rankings in all of its fine art areas, receiving many state level awards. There is a strong Art Department offering a wide range of classes for varied levels of ability and interests. Career-tech co-curricular activities include FFA in the agriculture department, with many student excelling in honors received. There is also an FBLA chapter (Future Business Leaders of America) which is very involved. FHS FBLA consistently earns top ratings at state competition. In addition, many students have won national FBLA honors. FBLA is known for building leadership and confidence in its members. Fairfield High School prides itself with several Nationally Board Certified Teachers. In addition, FHS had the honor of having the Iowa Teacher of the Year, 2016, Scott Slechta from its English/Language Arts Program.
