Mission Statement

The mission of Ashton School is to educate and inspire our children to become successful, contributing members of society.

About This Cause

Ashton Elementary School sits on an open wooded lot near the center of town in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The school houses students in Preschool through grade five. The building was constructed in three phases; in 1959, 1963 and most recently in 2008. Our mission is to educate and inspire our students to become successful, contributing members of society. We believe in promoting high expectations and standards of learning and behavior for all students within a safe, supportive and challenging environment. Our diverse population includes one tenth of our students learning English as a second language and about a fifth receiving free or reduced lunch. We celebrate and embrace diversity, which presents us with an opportunity to learn from each other and appreciate the different cultures represented here. Much of our ELL population is from India, coming to this country with work visas, which are often short term or cause families to relocate. This leads to a high mobility rate, which presents a challenge when creating stability and consistency for students. At Ashton School, we focus on the whole child, both mind and body. Our entire faculty is involved in helping students learn daily healthy practices that will be embedded in their lifestyle. The Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports System, "PBIS" addresses our students' social and emotional well-being and creates a climate of safety and belonging for all students. Students are provided with clear expectations and are recognized with a positive acknowledgment system. The MTSS three tier model is used to identify and support students’ academic, social and and emotional needs and establish supports at all levels. We offer ELL services, Special Education and Title 1 support. Students enjoy year long STEM, art, music, physical education, band, health and guidance lessons. We have a strong partnership between our teachers and families. The PTO sponsors many events that promote a positive school experience and build a sense of community. We offer before and after school daycare services and afterschool enrichment activities. We believe in having an open line of communication with our families and maintain a school website http://www.cumberlandschools.org/content/Ashton. Parents can also join “Ashton School Families”on Facebook. The principal sends a weekly email to parents with school and PTO announcements. Student receive a communication folder to bring back and forth between home and school. Classroom teachers also send home frequent newsletters about projects and curriculum information. Ashton students often engage in community service activities and are encouraged to do good deeds for one another to foster a sense of community within and outside the school. Volunteers are always welcomed at Ashton School!
