Mission Statement

Highland Community School is a 501(c)3 public charter school in an area where nearly 40% are living below the poverty line. Our mission is to be a community of diverse families and educators working together to offer quality Montessori education in a nurturing environment that enriches, empowers and inspires children to reach their potential while encouraging parents to become responsible for and involved with their children’s education. We offer Montessori programs for ages 14 months through 8th grade, including before- and after-school care, extra-curricular recreational programs, and summer camps. Each day, 440 children come together from a variety of backgrounds to embrace our founding principles of social justice, community building, and diversity.

About This Cause

Highland Community School is one of the most diverse public schools in the City of Milwaukee. Founded over fifty years ago, during a time when Milwaukeeans were marching for civil liberties in their own neighborhoods, Highland was born out of passion for education equality, social justice, caring for each other, and a yearning for family involvement. The “all for one, and one for all” atmosphere is still at the core of the school today. Highland Community School was founded with a commitment to the neighborhoods and the Montessori philosophy of teaching. The original school was in the Victor Schlitz mansion on 20th Street and Highland Avenue. Highland continued to grow as the community embraced Montessori’s nurturing and socially responsible brand of education. Relying on parents became an integral component of the daily operation of Highland and helped to set the standard for today’s parent involvement requirement.
