About This Cause

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School offers a Pre-Kindergarten program, Transitional Kindergarten, regular Kindergarten and a challenging curriculum for Grades 1-8. With 328 students and a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:7 for Pre-Kindergarten, 1:6 for Transitional Kindergarten and 1:18 for Kindergarten through Grade 8, we provide a small school environment and a close-knit parent community. The learning process at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School gives each student an education, which meets his/her needs spiritually, intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally. Our Catholic roots provide children excellent academics and strong faith formation that will serve them well their entire lives. Each subject has goals, objectives, and standards, which are followed by teachers. Students are expected to participate in the full curriculum, which follows the Archdiocese of San Francisco guidelines, which align to state and/or national standards. Differentiation within all grades and subjects supports student success. STEM Focus Our strong focus on science, technology, engineering and math skills and Common Core curriculum provides all students with a solid foundation in STEM subjects and prepares students for honors level coursework in high school. We are fortunate to have a computer science expert on staff managing our technology programs. Math To further support student success and challenge all learners, math classes in Grades 5-8 follow Common Core standards, while using technology consistently to support learning. Students hone skills, think critically, focus on precision, and interact with credentialed teachers in small group settings. Classes are divided into two or three groups annually.   Integrated Technology Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum in all classrooms every day. Teachers and students use interactive boards, document readers, Macbooks, iPads, and Chromebooks daily which supports instructional goals and objectives. Up to 87% of students in grades TK - 8 may be on a device at the same time. Science Our Lady of Mount Carmel School uses the Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, adopted by the California State Board of Education in 2013. This program provides a solid foundation in life, earth and space and physical science for all students. The school’s science lab provides hands-on learning experiments, small group instruction, and technology integration for all grades. Junior high students have a dedicated science teacher and take part in the county STEM fair in 8th Grade. Students are well-prepared for high school science, have a strong understanding of the scientific method, and many begin high school in honors level biology. Many of our students have placed in the County, Bay Area and State science and STEM fairs. The Arts Our Lady of Mount Carmel School offers a full program in the arts, including fine arts and performing arts. Student artwork is on display throughout the school. Performing Arts is a strong part of the curriculum in all grades and we ensure that all students participate. Fine Arts Program Recognizing the value of a strong arts education, we offer a dedicated art teacher trained in the highly regarded Art in Action program with bi-weekly instruction in grades TK - 8. Instruction includes art history and cultural arts as well as techniques using a wide variety of media. The school also takes place in several community art contests such as the Redwood City Annual Water Poster Contest. Be sure not to miss the student artwork on display at the annual open house each January. Performing Arts Beginning with our renowned Kindergarten performance of the Three Piggy Opera and continuing through 8th Grade, all students take part in performances during the year. Many performances are multi-grade events, giving students the opportunity to work and engage with students of different ages. Spanish for all Grades Beginning with once a week in the second year of Pre-Kindergarten, our children progress into grade level and advanced Spanish instruction twice a week. The goal of the Spanish program is to prepare students entering high school to begin Spanish II in the 9th Grade.   Preparation for High School Of the students that apply, graduates are accepted into Catholic college preparatory high schools such as Bellarmine, Junipero Serra, Mercy Burlingame, Notre Dame, Sacred Heart Prep, St. Francis and St. Ignatius. Many of our graduates place in honors classes or programs as well as Spanish II and second year mathematics in high school. Outdoor Education All 6th and 8th Graders attend a one-week camp through the Caritas Creek Environmental Education in Occidental, California. Caritas Creek's purpose is to help young people discover the connection between all living things; to build bridges between diverse socioeconomic and ethnic groups; and to foster in youth a deeper connection to the natural environment, to self, to the Spirit of Love, and to community. Caritas Creek was founded in 1975 by a group of Bay Area educators. Since then, hundreds of Bay Area schools and more than 100,000 children have benefited from the services, mission, and philosophy of Caritas Creek. The outdoor environmental education program is a vital part of many schools' curriculum. Our dedicated staff has the expertise to support children at both ends of the learning spectrum; beginning with 1:6 language arts support in Grade 1, and progressing into a comprehensive self-advocacy program to develop the skills they need to continue to receive learning support in high school and beyond. The Enrichment Program is available beginning in Grade 2 and is a weekly, project-based curriculum that provides activities, projects and field trips that extend and expand the general class curriculum. Students in our enrichment program have excellent grades and high standardized test scores. Special Academic Events Students in all grades plan and/or take active roles in school events, including dramatic plays, Book Buddies, our School Families program (in which small groups of students from each grade participate in special activities together), the annual Academic Decathlon, Spelling Bee and National Geographic Bee, and art and writing contests. Parents are invited to many of these events.   Physical Education and After-School Sports Program All students in grades TK - 8 participate in physical education twice a week. The program, run by the renowned Rhythm and Moves, teaches students successful ways of moving, so they not only enjoy physical activity, but learn that being fit is good for their physical, emotional and social well-being. The professional, credentialed and highly motivated Rhythm & Moves teachers engage each and every student—revealing their inner potential to embrace physical activity and life-long fitness. For more information about Rhythm and Moves, visit their website at http://www.rhythmandmoves.com/ Starting in 4th Grade, students may participate in our after-school sports program through the Peninsula Parishes and Schools League. We offer baseball and volleyball in the fall, basketball and cheerleading in winter, and track and field in the spring. See www.ppsl.org for more information.
