Mission Statement
As a mission of the Heart of Peoria Catholic Community, Sophia’s Kitchen believes in providing nourishment to those most in need through food for the day, support for their health needs and spiritual guidance for their immortal souls.
About This Cause
Sophia's Kitchen is a low-barrier soup kitchen located in zip code 61605, one of the top 10 poorest zip codes in America. We serve between 300 to 500 meals each weekday. In 2024, almost 100,000 meals were served. No ID is required, and no income requirements are needed. All are welcome. We serve the homeless, unemployed and underemployed. We strive to make it a welcoming place so all feel they can get services without embarrassment or judgment. Sophia's Kitchen serves hot meals 5 days each week, Monday through Friday from 9 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. In addition, we host a food pantry every Friday afternoon. This client choice pantry allows guests to shop from the food we have available for groceries that meet their families needs when we are not able to be open. On Thursdays, we give away pet food, realizing the intrinsic relationship many have with their family pet. We are a Catholic soup kitchen. We share our faith through our actions. Guests are not required to attend services, but rather have access to religious items and spiritual direction from Sisters, Brothers and Deacons if they choose.
