About This Cause
Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield Michigan has as its core values: Enjoying Fellowship, Encouraging Service, Encompassing Love, Enlightening Evangelism, Empowering Social Justice, and Engaging our Youth. In keeping with these principles, the church has a Missions Ministry which addresses food insecurity, homelessness, and clothing insecurity. This is done through The Closet of Hope Food Pantry, and The Closet of Hope Clothing Closet. These Church Ministries operating under the umbrella name of The Closet of Hope currently provide food to a client base of 100+ families and this is growing monthly. On a typical scheduled food distribution day, the pantry will provide food boxes weighing approximately 30-35 pounds with meat to each client family. Additionally, many of our clients require clothing and we average a 50%-55% usage rate of the Clothing Closet by our clients. As of Sept. 22, 2023 CYTD, we have provided 19,000 pounds of food to our client families as well as clothing. The pantry currently distributes food on the first Saturday of each month, and at Thanksgiving. The services of the food pantry and clothing closet are also available on an emergency basis to clients whose needs fall out of scheduled service days. A distinguishing characteristic of our pantry is how we treat our clients. Many clients have commented how service oriented and compassionately they are treated when they visit our site. We feel that it is important to show that we respect, value, and honor both the dignity and humanity of all persons.
