Every Tuesday, East Boston Community Soup Kitchen hosts a breakfast and lunch out of our cafeteria. It goes from 8:30am-3pm and we can always use help setting up, cooking, food running and cleaning. We offer many services to our population at this event such as free haircuts, resume editing and connecting our clients to resources. We are looking for volunteers to help us in all of these tasks, and in work outside of this. If these hours aren't possible for you, feel free to reach out and ask us about other work we do outside of the soup kitchen and we can see how else you may be able to help. Things such as outreach, fundraising, and delivering groceries are other possible ways you can help our organization reach the vulnerable in east boston.

Did you know that the majority of families facing food insecurity are not served by food banks due to stigma and other barriers? Hand Up Toronto helps overcome these barriers by delivering and distributing nutritious food to low income families in Toronto. Research shows that adequate nutrition significantly improves children’s mental health, academic performance, and long-term wellbeing.

Twice a month on a Saturday morning we distribute hampers out of the Scadding Court Community Centre in downtown Toronto to registered families. The hampers alternate between fresh produce (sourced by our nonprofit supplier FoodShare) and nutrient-dense non-perishables of rice, pasta, grains and beans (sourced by our other nonprofit supplier GlobalMedic). Scadding Court is a full-service community centre that does not house a foodbank, and serves clients of all walks of life: an ideal place for low-income families to pick up hampers in a dignified and stigma-free environment.

Volunteers will work with the Dispatch Manager to move boxes from the delivery truck into the community centre and give boxes out to families who come to pick-up. Ideal volunteers are friendly, reliable, and comfortable greeting and helping families and all other volunteers.

Volunteers who speak a second language are especially welcome! In the Scadding Court neighbourhood we have clients who speak Cantonese and Mandarin so volunteers who can help with translation are greeted warmly by clients.

Please note: you must be able to handle a two-wheeled dolly and push/pull a wagon with 50lbs on it up a ramp. Volunteers will be moving inside and outside the community centre so please dress accordingly and bring water. Event will take place rain or shine.

All shifts can be found here: https://www.handuptoronto.org/signup and you can sign up for any number of shifts - the commitment is flexible.

Any questions? Please reach out to our volunteer team: volunteer@handuptoronto.org
