Giving Children Hope has been supporting the greatest at-risk children-families in the Greater Orange County area with food provision since 1993. In partnership with local food banks and grocery stores, Giving Children Hope increased its capacity throughout the pandemic and continues to see food insecurity increase for many children and their families despite pandemic-related health concerns subsiding.

Volunteers will be assigned to pre-pack groceries for distribution, sort and distribute groceries, assist with community check-in, direct traffic, or other duties. Food distributions are critical connection points for our community to receive needed groceries. Individuals and Teams are welcome! Orientation and training are included in each shift.

Friday Distribution is hosted every week and we would love to have you join us! If you would like to volunteer please email our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@gchope.org.

After an interactive session on food security and the impact of the volunteering experience, you’ll roll up your sleeves and get on the road. Led by the FoodFilled staff, you’ll have hands-on experience in rescuing surplus food from local retailers (such as supermarkets, bakeries, or cafes). Then, you’ll go on a supermarket scavenger hunt to calculate the cost of the food rescued. Finally, you’ll have the powerful opportunity to hand-deliver the rescued food straight to charities supporting local vulnerable people. All logistics and preparation will be organised by FoodFilled. To conclude, we will join back at the FF workspace to debrief, reflect, and recap the huge impact you’ve made.

Scheduling Flexibility: Shift time, duration, and quantity can be customised to fit your team’s availability, including options for concurrent shifts or longer day engagements for larger groups. The number of staff members engaging in this activity can vary too.

We are seeking cooperation from all logistics providers, both domestic and international, by land and sea. We are not seeking for individual volunteers.

By assisting with the transportation of donated food, volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring that essential supplies reach distribution centers and ultimately, those in need. Expanding food donation logistics strengthens Japan’s food security network and serves as a model for similar initiatives worldwide.

Learn more about Sewa Canada's Feed the Hungry project:
https://sewacanada.com/Projects/Feed-the-Hungry-in-Canada

According to Statistics Canada, in spring 2024, nearly half (45%) of Canadians reported that rising prices were greatly affecting their ability to meet day-to-day expenses, 12 percentage points higher than what it was two years earlier (33%). Rising prices have a disproportionate impact on lower-income people in Canada. Rising prices are affecting the ability of Canadians to meet their day-to-day expenses, their concerns with housing affordability, the likelihood that they will obtain food or meals from community organizations, their financial stress, and the relationship between financial stress and quality of life. While food banks are facing an increased number of users, various shelters across cities do need help too with providing meals to its users. If you wish to volunteer your time to this program or gain volunteer hours, please email us at info@sewacanada.com.

Goal: Sewa Canada International has launched its 'Feed the Hungry in Canada' program in a few cities across Canada and aims to do more every month in more cities across Canada. The program involves providing:-

1. Hot meals prepared by our volunteers to the needy.
2. Dry food donations by our volunteers to the needy.

While most of the intended beneficiaries are the underprivileged and needy at shelters or missions in various cities, we will also attempt to address seniors in need or international students who may need help with dry food donations.

So far we have provided this service in Toronto, London, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver and aim to recruit new volunteers in other cities to carry out this service. We partner with other charities to deliver these meals.

A hot meal with fruit, bread, cookies/chips, its packaging and delivery can cost up to $5 per person. Please DONATE generously to help us feed the underprivileged in Canada. You may also direct your donations to a specific city of your choice by indicating the name of the city in the message field while making the donation. All donations are tax deductible in Canada. Tax receipts will be issued automatically.

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our mission. Their commitment and hard work inspire us every day. Let's continue to make a positive impact together! We are flexible on commitment but encourage once a week to build relationships with the patrons. Filling in on holiday breaks and when our placement students are off is also needed. Schedule is posted the week before and volunteers can claim shifts that work for their schedule.

Our values:
People First | Accessible & Low Barrier | Caring & Responsive | Safe & Trusted | Equitable & Respectful

9:15-1:15 or 12pm-4pm Monday-Friday:
-Coat Check: Assist patrons with our coat check procedures. Patrons put items in a sealed container during their visit and sometimes need to be gently reminded about our rules. One coat check volunteer takes down the patrons information while two other coat-check volunteers place the bins in a secure location and then wipe the bins out after use.
-Washroom Volunteers: Sign the patrons in and out of our washrooms, use a sanitizing wipe on high-touch surfaces like door knobs and taps after each use (not a detailed clean).

9:15-1:15PM Monday-Friday (no afternoon shift):
-Food and Clothing Bank: Organize and fulfill pantry orders for our patrons
-Food Service Volunteers: hand out pre-plated lunch, serve coffee, water and juice

Monday-Saturday 8am-Noon:
-Kitchen Volunteers: Cook, chop, plate lunch, and tidy the kitchen

As Needed:
-Pick Ups and Drops Offs: Occasionally, we need volunteers to pick up items, or drop them off around Oshawa and the surrounding area, such as bags of out-going or incoming donations
