Embark on a journey through Cambodia’s vibrant tapestry, from the ancient wonders of the Khmer Empire to the modern tragedies of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. While the scars of Cambodia’s past are still healing, the Khmer spirit remains resilient, buoyed by significant economic progress in recent decades. However, Cambodia grapples with being one of the world’s poorest nations, where inequality persists, with 18 percent of the population and 36 percent of young people living below the poverty line. Basic facilities are a challenge for many, and rudimentary housing with dirt floors and fragile structures is commonplace.

Poverty in Siem Reap is widespread, with many families facing daily challenges to meet basic needs like food, healthcare, and education. Despite its booming tourism industry, the benefits have not reached all residents, leaving a significant portion of the population living in precarious conditions.

Yet, amidst these challenges, hope shines through. Habitat for Humanity Australia, in partnership with Global Village volunteers, works tirelessly to provide safe, affordable housing for vulnerable families in Battambang. Together, they strive to turn dreams of decent housing into reality, supporting those living with illnesses, child-headed households, and older adults. Volunteers, standing shoulder to shoulder with partner families, dedicate a week to building not just homes, but brighter futures.

“Arkun” means “thank you” in Khmer. Join us on the Arkun Build. Together, we can build homes and hope in Battambang, Cambodia.

In the decade prior to the pandemic, Vietnam made significant progress in reducing its poverty rate, though the benefits were not equally shared. The pandemic, however, halted job creation and income growth, exacerbating the divide between the rich and the poor.
The country still faces significant challenges in combating poverty and hunger, particularly for vulnerable groups such as ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and the elderly. These groups remain in urgent need of basic services, including safe housing. The lack of adequate housing severely impacts the poorest communities, leading to health problems, poor sanitation, and a lack of comfort. For many children, this also means missing out on education.

Vietnam is also highly vulnerable to natural disasters, with poor families living in inadequate housing being the hardest hit.

Over the course of a week, the team will work alongside families in Dong Thap to build disaster-resistant homes that can withstand floods, storms, and typhoons. Your support will not only help provide safe shelter but also improve access to water, sanitation, and vital training in disaster preparedness. Together, you will be building more than just homes. You will be creating hope, strengthening communities, and shaping brighter futures.

Global Village is heading to Yogyakarta (often called “Jogja”) on the island of Java, known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. In Tuksono Village, Kulon Progo district, almost half the population live in poverty in inappropriate or indecent houses, with several generations living under the same leaking roof on dirt floors, who face a lack of clean water in the dry season. Through the Global Village program, volunteers help the Tuksono village community become more prosperous by providing a safe, healthy and decent place to live.

Global Village volunteers will assist selected families in building a new permanent house with private bedrooms and toilets. Typical volunteer tasks include digging and setting the foundation, bending and wiring rebars, mixing cement or concrete, laying bricks, and building walls. You will make far more than just a safe, comfortable and secure shelter; you will create hope, communities and futures.
