Downtown Women’s Center Mission: The mission of the Downtown Women's Center (DWC) is to end homelessness for women and gender diverse individuals by providing safe housing, and supportive services centered on wellness, employment, and advocacy. DWC’s innovative and individualized approach addresses the immediate and long-term needs of women and gender diverse individuals overcoming homelessness and we serve nearly 5,000 community members annually.

Volunteer Activity Details: This volunteer workshop gives attendees the opportunity to give back to the community while also gaining in-depth knowledge of homelessness in Los Angeles. Volunteers will join us at our San Pedro Street site to prepare 100 snack packs, which provide an essential meal for the community members we serve. We’ll start the day with an educational presentation on homelessness in Skid Row, hear from a DWC Advocate with lived experience, then the group will assemble snack packs with their team before taking a tour of our site, including the Day Center and Permanent Supportive Housing.

Guidelines for Volunteers: We ask that volunteers are over 18 years old and wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. When volunteers arrive onsite for their volunteer day, a representative from Downtown Women’s Center will greet them at the entrance and lead them to the space for volunteering. Prior to the event, we will email volunteers a brief online form to fill out. No training is required.

Parking and Accessibility: There are two parking lots available two blocks away from the volunteer site. There is an outdoor lot available for $10 (located at 410 Boyd St) and an indoor lot available for $15 (the entrance is located at 415 Boyd St). For anyone with accessibility challenges, we recommend carpooling or using rideshare services so that they can be dropped off in front of the building. The snack pack assembly portion of the day will be set-up for volunteers to stand, but we can accommodate individuals who need to remain seated.

Budget Request: $1,000. This budget will go towards purchasing ingredients to prepare 100 snack packs. Our team at Downtown Women’s Center will purchase all the ingredients and have them ready for your team. Each snack pack includes a sandwich, a snack, a fruit, and a beverage. This budget will also go towards compensating a DWC Advocate for the time they spend with the group, sharing their lived experience with homelessness.

Number of Volunteers: Up to 12. There should be a minimum of 4 volunteers for this activity.

Genesis Place is Yonge Street Mission’s 26-unit transitional housing building, providing safe, affordable housing for individuals and families who have experienced homelessness. It offers stability and support as residents work toward long-term housing and independence. Currently, only 21 of the 26 units have air conditioning — leaving several people, including seniors and young children, without relief during extreme summer heat.

Each AC unit costs approximately $300, and financial support to help purchase — and even install — units would be greatly appreciated!

Genesis Place is Yonge Street Mission’s 26-unit transitional housing building for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Right now, six children under 10 live there, but there are almost no toys, books, or child-friendly furnishings. Creating a play space with age-appropriate items would support healthy development, ease the stress of transition, and reduce pressure on parents to constantly entertain their kids. With financial support, we can provide toys, books, and simple furniture — and we would love to show interested BMO volunteers the space and have your help in building out and decorating the space to make it warm and welcoming.

Get practical and roll up your sleeves for one day to help someone else. Through Present you do the work that you do well and that, unfortunately, someone else can't or no longer does well. Usually you come to someone without a network. Someone who lacks contacts in the neighborhood and could use help with a practical job.

In practical projects, you refurbish people's living environment so that they can make a fresh new start.

For example:
- Garden tidying up (pruning, clearing weeds)
- De-cluttering the garden and removing garbage from the container
- Cleaning up the house
- Refurbishing the house (e.g. painting the walls, but also hanging up curtains etc.)

At Present you decide yourself, together with your group, on which date you will start helping someone. Present then organizes a suitable project on the date chosen by you. This way, a Present project always fits your agenda!

For all projects it applies that the help goes to people who have no other possibilities. The projects are guided by a group supervisor of Present and the aid worker remains involved in the implementation.

By helping one day(part), you and a group can make a new start possible for the resident. The aid worker remains involved with the resident even after the project day is over. In this way, the project becomes part of the counseling process.
