This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the success of Joy Collaborative’s beneficiaries and who has a track record of board leadership. The selected Board Chair will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Use their nonprofit or business experience to guide strategic planning and oversee specific objectives.

Relationship with the Executive Director
The ED manages the operational activities, and the chair leads the board. Both share power in their mutual pursuit to advance the mission of the organization and need to support, consult, and complement each other. To make this happen, they need to communicate openly and regularly.
This partnership needs constant attention and open and regular communication. Personalities change but the positions remain. Each partner needs to adapt to and cultivate the working relationship.
Think of the ED as the gatekeeper for the staff and the chair as the gatekeeper for the rest of the board. This helps to prevent miscommunication and allows both leaders to stay aware of each other’s needs.

Board meetings will be held monthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.
Board leadership positions are voted on by all current Board members.
Succession planning
Oversee leadership positions and maintain balance of power between them.
Recruit board members with demonstrated leadership qualities to avoid running out of qualified candidates. Your governance committee should provide continuous opportunities and training for board members to create a pool of leadership candidates when a new election is in order.
Involve the full board in the leadership succession process. Define the necessary qualifications. The governance committee should consult with each board member for nominations and eventually, through feedback, bring a single candidate to the board for election. It is important to that Joy Collaborative’s leadership group contains high level talent, a broad base of expertise, and reflects a diverse set of backgrounds. This process avoids the notion of winners and losers while stressing consensus and group decision making.

Literacy is the best way to escape the cycle of poverty! We have donated five libraries in Guatemala and there are another two on the horizon. Books are difficult and expensive to purchase in Guatemala, so we are constantly searching for Spanish (or bilingual ENG/ESP) books to transport with us each time we visit Guatemala.Do you live in a part of the country with a wonderful Hispanic population? If so, chances are great that you could collect new or gently used Spanish books that we could take with us to Guatemala!
We are looking for books that would cater to a preschool and elementary school children. Board books and hardcovers are best because of their durability, but paperbacks and soft covers are equally treasured and used.
If you have the ability to acquire Spanish/bilingual books in your hometown and ship them to us, we will gladly transport them to Guatemala and get them in the hands of eager young readers.
Even though books are heavy, if you ship them via USPS Media Mail, it is not expensive.
