"Just Say YES STEMFEST" is an annual event that launched on GA STEM DAY 2017 as part of Metamorphasis Powerhouse Company's Just Say YES! to Youth Initiative showcasing our Building E-STE(A)M For Youth Partnership Alliance.
Why digital skills?
From basic digital literacy to advanced computer science, digital skills are often out of reach for the young people who need them most. In a world being transformed by technology, all youth should have the opportunity to develop the creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills gained by learning computer science.
The focus of this event is to:
-Reinforce growth mindset in young people and transition their thinking from "I CAN'T" into "I CAN" for STEM-related curriculum and careers
-Help connect parents, educators and STEAM providers together to increase a capacity for a wider opportunity for partnership of resources and youth enrichment
-Increase impact for the lives of children needing a deeper exploration of computer science, technology, engineering, the arts, mechanics, math, and medicine.
-Serve the community in free open public spaces to increase the opportunities for fun learning environments for all people
-Aspire to Inspire and help us Transform "I CAN'T" into "I CAN" for youth by serving as a volunteer, strategic partner, and STEAM advocate.

BGr8 is a national program designed to assist girls transitioning from primary to high school (approximately 12 years old), who have experienced trauma including abuse and/or neglect and are now in out-of-home-care (OOHC), to remain engaged in their education, leading to better life outcomes.Entering high school is a critical transition point, and these girls often struggle to navigate the complex and triggering situations while remaining engaged in study, which can result in minimal class engagement, suspensions and poor educational outcomes. BGr8 provides an opportunity for girls who have experienced trauma and complex family situations to remain engaged with their education via access to support tools and resources to assist with triggering situations arising during school, all in a flexible learning environment.
Currently in Australia there are 45,756 children experiencing displacement in OOHC. Many will have multiple placements, bouncing around the system from home to home. The impacts of trauma and impermanency are well documented, with many experiencing negative life outcomes such as homelessness, substance abuse, mental health issues and interactions with juvenile justice.
BGr8 is designed to provide inspiration, hope and practical strategies to assist these children to engage with their education in a way that provides them with access to bright futures and the ability to change their trajectory.
The activity involves assistance in establishing a website (or via other mechanism) to enable a pilot program with selected schools. The site would house initial educational material and video along with ability for students to engage (such as Q&A).
