Prom is around the corner, which means promposals, dresses, tuxes, and sweet dance moves! For many students (and for many of us parents), staying out later than usual or staying out all night is a prom night rite of passage. Unfortunately, this weekend can also mean tragedy as, according to the US Department of Transportation, on an average prom weekend 48 students are killed and 5,202 students are injured in motor vehicle accidents, 40% of which are alcohol related. As a result, the post prom committee has been planning a safe, alcohol and drug-free post prom event, the intent of which is to keep all students safe on prom night, especially as they enjoy this rite of passage. This year’s post prom will be held on May 11-12th from 11:30 pm until 4:00 am at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Post prom is FREE to students and all juniors and seniors (and their guests) are invited to attend, whether or not they choose to attend prom. The evening will consist of food, games (glow dodgeball, poker, deal or no deal, and more!), ice skating, broomball, a hypnotist, and prizes! Raffle prizes are given out throughout the evening, so students who arrive early will have more chances to win, and grand prizes are awarded at the end of the event. This encourages students to remain at post prom until morning, after which they can return home safely. Last year, we hosted over 800 students at this fun-filled event.
As you might guess, an event of this size requires many, many volunteers. The post prom committee of 12 parents has been working on this year's event since last summer. Many other parents will volunteer the night of the event in roles such as set-up, security, check-in, games, food, prizes, and clean-up.
Kohl's volunteers have become an integral part of this event. For the past few years, Kohl's employees have chosen to help with set up and have mainly been involved in setting up the prize tables. While the set up shift is earlier, Kohl's employees are also welcome to volunteer for any of the other roles listed. We do not expect Kohl's employees to fill all the attached roles, but have included them in case there are any night owls or people who would prefer to see post prom in action.
Having Kohl's volunteers the past few years has allowed us to provide a $500 scholarship grand prize, which is much sought after by the students. Last year, we labeled the scholarship the "Kohl's Cares Scholarship" and included that this would not be possible without the volunteers from Kohl's and the grant program.
This year, we would love to again include this scholarship and are hoping to have enough volunteers to make this possible. If more than one store participates, we would offer more than one scholarship. However, we still welcome all volunteers, regardless if there are enough for the grant.
We will begin scheduling parent volunteers in a few weeks. If you know when and where Kohl's volunteers would like to participate, even before you have all the volunteers, please let me know so that we do not fill those spots with parents. You can reach me at 319-213-7667 or PostPromLM@gmail.com.
Thank you again for your support! We look forward to volunteering with you!
