This will be a bingo fundraiser for our eight band programs. Our list of expenditures for next year exceed our budget and we therefore needed to host a fundraiser. We need to invest into a trailer to transport instruments and props and replace aging/broken equipment. We also need to increase our funding so that we can supplement those students that need financial assistance to activity participate in band activities. We will be hosting a bingo with 20 games and three to four raffles. We hope to attract 300-400 bingo players and will need many hands to make this go smoothly.

This event will also have a charity component which will benefit the local food bank.

FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, our student-run team is challenged to raise funds, hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as we can get, with professional mentors volunteering their time and talents to guide teams.

This March, we are helping the Bensalem HS Robotics team host a robotics competition at Bensalem High School and we in need of volunteers to help staff the event by selling concessions and directing foot traffic inside the venue.

Faire History: A regional team working to increase Science, Technology, Engineering/Entrepreneurship, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) efforts in our region felt that bringing a Mini Maker Faire to Northwest Missouri would really boost interest in these areas. This year’s faire event details are:

The Big Muddy Mini Maker Faire
Saturday, March 2, 2019
10 am – 5 pm
Restoration Natatorium
117 Francis Street
Saint Joseph, Missouri 64501

We are holding the faire just a few blocks up from the river after which our faire was named. Historically, the building was an indoor swimming pool in the 1800’s, possibly the first one this side of the river. This year, we are opening an additional warehouse next door to where we held the faire last year to allow for even more makers!

What is a Maker Faire? A Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth – part science fair, part county fair, and part something new. This is a family-friendly showcase of invention and creativity. The faire brings together tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, food artisans, hobbyists, engineers, artists, students and commercial exhibitors – all known by the name “Makers.” Makers love to show their creations and share their knowledge! Patrons come to learn how to be Makers.

Maker Faires are held all over the world including Vienna, Berlin, Paris, New York, and Kansas City. Now we enjoy having one in Northwest Missouri. This event provides an opportunity for community members and businesses leaders to see what kinds of innovative ideas are happening in our region. Our goal is to offer an exciting, educational and entertaining experience!

Maker Types: The following are just some of the types of Makers generally featured at Maker Faires:
Student Projects
Robotics
Arduino projects
Raspberry Pi
Space projects
Food makers
Conductive materials projects
Kit makers
Interactive art projects
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects
3D Printers and CNC Mills
Textile Arts and Crafts
E-Textiles
Home Energy Monitoring
Rockets and RC Toys
Sustainability & Green Tech
Radios, Vintage Computers and Game Systems
Electronics
Electric Vehicles
Science, Biology/Biotech, and Chemistry projects
Puppets, Kites, and Other Whimsical Creations
Bicycles
Large-scale Art
Music Performances and Participation
Unusual Tools or Machines
How to Fix Things or Take them Apart

The Big Muddy Mini Maker Faire will draw hundreds of people interested in viewing a wide variety of maker exhibits and workshops and engaging in interesting presentations.

The logistics required for this event are challenging; therefore, dedicated volunteers who can embrace the spirit of Maker Faire as well as the creativity and resourcefulness it represents are needed.

We will need volunteers during the faire for a variety of positions such as:
• Putting wristbands on patrons
• Collecting zip codes and how faire patrons learned about the faire
• Counting the patrons as they enter the faire
• Refreshing the food in the hospitality room
• Showing patrons where the booths and facilities are located
• Covering the booths for a few minutes so the makers may use the restroom
• Ensuring faire patrons do not go into spaces that are not being used for the faire
• And providing extra support for the makers

Volunteers will also be needed to help set up and take down the faire and will assist in:
• Setting up and taking down tables and chairs
• Assisting makers in carrying in and out their exhibit materials

We want to raise awareness of what our foundation stands for, what it's accomplishments are and how we can add new supporters to our current supporter base. For that we find ourselves having a lack of knowledge to accomplish this in the social media environment. We search for a person who we can contact and who might be able to provide us with technical support and feedback on the try-outs we do. For now we're only on facebook but would like to explore the possibilities on other SMN's as well.

Since 2012, the St. Matthew Baptist Church Youth Ministry has assisted young ladies in the community who need help preparing for the Prom by presenting “Ruth’s Closet”.…… “A Program Run by Girls for Girls”!! This year, it will be held on February 24, 2018 in the Fellowship Hall of St. Matthew Baptist Church.

This ministry is designed to assist young ladies with dresses, shoes, accessories and make up…all of the essentials that young ladies desire to have that ultimately ensures them with feeling beautiful during the prom at their school. This Mission project is also designed to allow those who probably would not be able to afford a dress, the perfect spot to shop for the perfect dress just for this special occasion. At the end of their experience, before they leave the church, our female Associate Ministers, speak with them about being young ladies, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and then pray with them. All of this is done with each girl. This ministry has received the blessings of smiles on the faces of the girls, tears in the eyes of mothers (and fathers)/grandmothers/guardians and friends who understand what this opportunity means to the girls and some have even accepted Christ as their Savior. This is a ministry of the mind, body and soul.

The girls are referred by school counselors, foster care, social services, churches, and others who hear about the program and ask that their clients participate.
