"A Christmas Carol" is Hartford Stage's annual gift to the community - a beloved theatrical telling of Charles Dickens' classic yuletide tale. Each year, thousands of students from across the region attend a performance. For many of them, it is their first time seeing a live theatrical event. Due to demand from area schools, we have added more matinee performances to our schedule this year.Hartford Stage seeks volunteer ushers for student matinees between December 3 - December 19 (see schedule of shifts for details). Performances begin at 10:30 am, and ushers need to arrive an hour earlier. Hartford Stage seeks up to 12 volunteers from The Hartford per performance.
As primary members of the Front of House Staff, Hartford Stage Ushers are responsible for a variety of show-related duties. Ushers are trained in Customer Service, Hospitality and Patron Assistance skills, and through this work may develop an expertise in seating procedures.
Ushers are responsible for greeting patrons, performing basic seating-related duties, providing information, and accessibility accommodation duties. For student matinees, an important function is helping to guide the efficient and safe disembarkation from buses, moving students inside the theatre and into their designated seats swiftly.
Hartford Stage Ushers are given information about the theatre, the performance, and current exhibitions in both the upper and lower lobbies. They are encouraged to share this information when asked by our enthusiastic patrons. Every usher is given a basic training session prior to a volunteer shift, and then can be responsible for handling a variety of patron requests and providing the best possible Patron Service at Hartford Stage. When Volunteering at Hartford Stage Front of House, our Usher staff is guided by House Management in learning and employing best practices in this regard.
Ushering for this production is a three-hour time commitment, and involves standing and walking during the duration of this time. Once the audience is seated and the show has begun, ushers may watch the performance from the standing room area or from unclaimed seats in the auditorium. (Student matinees are typically sold out; no seating is guaranteed to ushers while they are working their shift.)
Personal presentation skills are very important, and professional guidance is provided in the Usher training. All skills learned in this volunteer position will prove to be transferable to almost any professional theatre operation, and especially to any subsequent show at the Hartford Stage. We would welcome any employees of The Hartford to return as volunteers later in the season for matinee or regular evening performances.
Employees of The Hartford are encouraged to wear company-branded shirts, buttons, or caps with khakis or dark slacks.

At Capital One/ Junior Achievement Finance Park each student becomes “an adult for the day” in an electronic simulation. The students are assigned a life scenario so they can experience firsthand the real-life challenges of making personal budgeting decisions. After calculating their net monthly income and savings goals, students visit kiosks that represent different budget categories such housing, health insurance, groceries, and utilities. Anyone with real world monthly budgeting experience can become a volunteer. JA Finance Park Volunteers play a key role by helping the students understand the concepts of personal financial planning and career exploration.

Whatever your expertise, passion or hobby is, there is a group of youth who would love you to share it with them! Our goal is to help these youth, who have so much untapped potential to REWRITE THE SCRIPTS OF THEIR LIVES. We do by this surrounding the youth with good adult role models like you. You boost their self-esteem just by coming and spending time with them. They interpret your time as demonstrating that you value them and have confidence in their futures. Current volunteers invest time with the youth sharing art, business and social etiquette, budgeting/finances, cooking, book clubs, music, photography, career panels, mentoring, tutoring, sewing, sports, chess, golf, and community service socials. Don’t see anything that interests you? We’ll help you start up your favorite pastime or interest. (must be over 21 years old and pass a background check) More info here: http://www.echoglen.org/

Each year, The CL Education Foundation organizes and runs the Cardington-Lincoln School District's annual Holiday Bazaar. The bazaar is a community-wide event, and features performances by CL students, over 60 craft vendors, food concessions, and fundraising opportunities for district grades and student groups. We need 5 volunteers on Saturday, November 17, from 8 AM until noon and then noon until 4 PM to run several functions: a photoshoot using a backdrop of Santa's Sleigh, "Timeless Tree," on which community members place a snowflake to remember loved ones from holidays past, and "Adopt-a-Tree," a silent auction of pre-lit trees decorated by school groups and grades. The "Santa's Sleigh" photoshoot and "Timeless Tree" are free to all, and "Adopt-a-Tree" is a fundraiser for the participating school grades and groups.
Not only will this be a huge help to the Cardington school community, but it will be fun as well!
