SMART is a comprehensive eight-year program that provides low-income students in San Francisco access to an exceptional education and the skills needed to thrive in college and in life. SMART’s vision is to end the cycle of poverty in San Francisco by providing students and families academic, social-emotional, and financial support, as well as college preparation and career exploration.Come support 8th grade SMART Scholars as they prepare to write their personal statement essays. These essays are essential in completing their applications to private high schools in San Francisco. You'll be paired with a Scholar 1:1. You'll support with brainstorming, crafting, editing, and polishing essays. A guide will be provided by SMART staff before the event. A short volunteer orientation is also provided 10 minutes prior to the event to align on your role for the event.

Opportunity Details
PurposeThe Volunteer Tutor helps young people with writing and other creative storytelling activities as part of the Story Island Project workshops.
Supervision
Story Island Project’s Volunteer Coordinator and General Manager will supervise Volunteer Tutors and provide ongoing support.
Time commitment
To be negotiated with the Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteer Tutors usually help out at weekly, 90-minute school-based workshops; workshop programs typically run for 8 weeks.
Volunteer duties and responsibilities
As a Volunteer Tutor with the Story Island Project you will assist young people one-on-one or in small groups, performing the following duties:
• listening to the instructions given to the young people by the Story Leader
• helping young people to carry out the instructions given by providing support and encouragement as required. Support may take many forms, including:
o listening to and giving positive feedback on young people’s writing
o asking questions to help young people develop their ideas
o suggesting strategies when young people get ‘stuck’
o helping young people to write down their stories
o encouraging young people to stay on task
o helping with spelling, punctuation and grammar
o allowing students time to think as they develop their creative ideas
• other duties as requested by the Volunteer Coordinator or the Story Leader
• Volunteer Tutors must have their Working With Vulnerable People card.
Skills and qualities required (or desirable) for role
We are looking for people with the following skills and qualities to fill this volunteer role:
• enthusiasm

• the ability to let young people lead the creative process (ensuring that young people create their own work

For this reason, all Volunteer Tutors must have a current Working with Vulnerable People Card. The details of this card need to be recorded by The Story Island Project before volunteers begin their tutoring role.
We encourage all SIP volunteers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and ask volunteers to participate in COVID-safe behaviours (e.g. frequent hand washing, physical distancing, etc.).

Induction
Before commencing your role as a Volunteer Tutor, you need to complete an induction session where we take you through the requirements of the role and all relevant policy and safety information. At the end of this session, we ask you to sign our Volunteer Agreement.

Connections® is a co-facilitated listening circle for our students to share their stories. Connections facilitators lead discussions around mental wellness and personal growth, self-advocacy, voice, listening skills, and sense of belonging.Responsibilities
- Co-lead a 45-minute to 1-hour Connections circle for a group of 10-15 high school students each Saturday morning
- Collaborate with other facilitators and meet 1-2x/month to ensure consistency of program, share best practices and make modifications as necessary

Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads is part of an international network of programs that offers youth (ages 11-18) the opportunity to gain skills and improve their world through volunteering. YVCHR mobilizes diverse groups of youth volunteers from across the community into teams to complete meaningful service-learning projects that address a variety of important needs across Hampton Roads. Team Leaders plan, recruit for, and facilitate service-learning projects for youth and represent the YVC program to schools, agencies and other YVC program partners. Adult volunteers who can commit to at least one project per month (evenings/weekends) and who wish to join our team are invited to email kmorgan@yvchr.org for an application. Prospective Team Leaders who have a particular interest or area of expertise may choose to facilitate projects in one strategic focus area or that address a particular need (animal welfare, environmental conservation, hunger, homelessness, community gardening, etc.).Minimum Qualifications
● Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED
● Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien
● Be available for a minimum of one project per month (evenings, Saturdays and school breaks)
● Have experience volunteering and working with youth

● Communicate well with people from a variety of backgrounds, including at-risk youth

Opportunity Details
As a member of our judging panel, you play a critical role in the success of our annual Canstructure event! Students in grades K-12 build 3-dimensional works of art from hundreds of canned food items in this timed competition. Their impressive efforts are showcased at Patrick Henry Mall as they work together to combat hunger using STEM skills, creativity and teamwork. Elementary teams compete remotely by submitting video presentations from their school sites, and middle school and high school teams compete in-person on Saturday, April 26, 2025. All teams are provided clear guidelines and rules for building their CANstructures and are encouraged to refer to the judging rubric throughout the planning, designing and building phases of the competition. Judges can choose to participate on our virtual panel for grades K-5 via video conference the week prior or on our in-person panel at the "main event" at Patrick Henry Mall. All teams are recognized at Center Court at the live event, and trophies are awarded to top teams in each category.This event is important because it engages youth in a team-based service-learning experience that teaches and reinforces STEM and workplace readiness skills while addressing food insecurity in our local community!
