Families Canada's “Empowering Women through Financial Education” program will help women living on low incomes access financial literacy seminars, by bringing volunteer financial literacy educators affiliated with formal financial literacy programs into selected family support centres across Canada.National research has shown that many existing financial literacy programs are not accessible for women living on low incomes, especially women who have experienced violence or trauma. Utilizing trauma and violence-informed approaches in financial literacy programming will increase women’s sense of safety, control and resilience—as well as decrease the risk of unintentionally re-traumatizing program participants. It is through incorporating trauma and violence-informed approaches (TVIA) that financial literacy programs will become more accessible to women living on low incomes.
With CIBC’s financial support, Families Canada's will help host financial literacy seminars that are trauma- and violence-informed in selected family support centres in Canada. The seminars will provide learning opportunities for women living on low incomes to improve their financial literacy knowledge, skills and confidence—all of which leads to achieving financial wellbeing. These seminars will be delivered by financial literacy educators affiliated with formal financial literacy programs. Financial literacy educators will complete Families Canada's "SAFE Women" professional development course in advance of delivering the seminars. The "SAFE Women" course helps financial literacy educators understand and apply trauma- and violence-informed approaches (TVIA) when supporting women. The SAFE Women course is publicly accessible at: https://training.familiescanada.ca/catalog/info/id:136
Families Canada is in the process of identifying family support centres in Canada who would like to host a financial literacy seminar, and encourages financial literacy educators who are interested in this work to connect with us, in case a family support centre in your community could use your support.
We are looking for financial literacy educators who are:
- affiliated with a formal financial literacy education program
- interested and willing to complete a brief (1.5 hrs) e-learning module on incorporating trauma- and violence-informed approaches into financial literacy programming
- willing to work directly with a family support centre
- passionate about providing financial literacy education to marginalized groups
- dedicated to demonstrating a non-judgemental, anti-discriminatory, and non-stigmatizing attitude as a fundamental aspect of their professional role
*some family support centres may prioritize financial literacy educators who are women
Next Steps:
- email Robert Brown, Project Officer, at rbrown@familiescanada.ca and share your: name, email, job title and organization, city, province/territory, and the name of the financial literacy program that you are trained to deliver. We will follow up if a family support centre in your area would like a financial literacy seminar!
