Information about Bookmark:
Bookmark has a simple vision, we want every child to read. We improve children’s literacy by promoting a reading for pleasure culture in primary schools, with a focus on supporting children in the most disadvantaged communities. more than one in four children leave primary school unable to read well, which directly contributes to poor educational attainment. According to research, children who don't read well are more likely to have a lower life expectancy, in addition to poor mental health and unemployment. Children need us now more than ever. We’re delighted to offer you the exciting opportunity to volunteer to reinvigorate a library space at two of our partner schools. This would involve sorting books into categories, removing any books that have been tampered with, tidying the space and making it an inviting area for the children to read – this could involve creating crafts to be used in the reading area. Can you volunteer at either of these schools?

1. Monday 2nd June at Fairlawn Primary School - Honor Oak Rd, London SE23 3SB (nearest stations: Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill). Time slot: TBC – 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours (likely to be in the afternoon given the half term the week before). 2-4 volunteers required

2. Monday 23rd June at Holmleigh Primary School - Dunsmure Rd, London, N16 5PU (nearest stations: Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill). Time slot: TBC – 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. 2-4 volunteers required

Dress code: casual/comfortable

These dates and times are provisional and will be confirmed as soon as possible.

Please confirm your interest by emailing isabella.culey@bookmarkreading.org with your preferred school and time.

If you are interested in joining the schools in June for the library tidies please do sign up! Children and young people who use the school library are more likely to say that they enjoy reading and writing, that they read and write daily, see themselves as better readers and writers, and have more positive attitudes towards reading and writing!

Help us create an environment that children want to read in!

About Bookmark:
Bookmark Reading Charity was set up in 2018 with a very simple vision: we want every child to read. In England, more than 1 in 4 children are leaving primary school unable to read at the expected standard. This disproportionately impacts children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who leave primary school on average 10 months behind their peers. We work to improve children’s literacy by promoting a reading for pleasure culture in primary schools, with a focus on supporting children in the most disadvantaged communities.

As a Catholic school, our organization operates at a deficit and relies heavily on fundraising and volunteerism to enhance the experience of students, families, and staff. Volunteer needs range from field volunteering (like running concessions, running admission at sporting events, set up and break down for events/sports, coaching, class parents, etc) to more skill-based volunteering (like strategic planning and fundraising, event planning, marketing, process improvement, networking, etc).

A heavy emphasis on volunteerism ensures our staff can focus on the students and that our administration can focus on staff development thereby providing the best dual language education possible.
