Learning Matters currently has several board seats available with an eye toward Community Engagement and Fundraising. If you are a champion for Dyslexia and have a passion for education, youth, and literacy we'd love to talk with you. Learning Matters works to reduce barriers to learning and ensure educational equity for K-12 students with learning disabilities by providing academic assessment, individualized instruction, and educational advocacy regardless of socio-economic status. Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, and ADHD are examples of common learning disabilities.

Opportunity Details

The social impact of illiteracy cannot be understated. It is estimated that 1-in-5 students are adversely affected by the presence of a learning disability. We're going the extra mile to help our children read, raise awareness and reduce the stigma of Dyslexia. In the effort to break the cycle of poverty and ensure educational equity, funds raised by the event will directly support families who are financially not able to access necessary academic support services for their child. This is our annual book sale. It is our biggest money maker of the year for the library. It takes a lot of volunteers and help to make it happen.

Opportunity Details

Anchorage Imagination Library, a program of Best Beginnings, has been sending books to children from Girdwood to Chugiak since 2009. Today, 8,500 children under age 5 receive a new, high-quality book each month through this program at no cost to their families.

This program is more than books! It is meaningful parent/child interaction, brain-building moments, and getting ready for kindergarten! Family events and helpful tips about early learning boost the impact of the program. To celebrate we'll be hosting a free family event. We will need lots of volunteers to help facilitate educational children activities with the help of numerous community organizations, assist with check-in, giving away prizes, and more!

This is a BOGO book fair that will take place on May 21. Many parents will be in the building and this will allow them to stock up on summer reading books at a bargain to prevent the summer reading slide (where students can lose up to three months of progress).
