Volunteers are the heart and soul of Clean Ocean Action's Beach Sweeps and have made it a successful and sought-after activity every Spring and Fall for nearly 40 years. Since launching the region’s first beach cleanup program in 1985, over 169,675 volunteers have participated, removed, and tallied 8,491,233 pieces of debris from over 80 sites in 62 municipalities and parks along the Atlantic Ocean coast, bay shores, inland rivers, streams, and the Delaware River. At each Beach Sweeps event, volunteers write down and tally the items collected from beaches on data cards, which are available in English and Spanish. The data cards, completed by volunteers, provide a valuable snapshot of pollution problems, particularly from single-use plastic items.
Clean Ocean Action staff reviews the data cards submitted by Beach Captains from the dozens of sites and enters the data into a database system. The data from hundreds of data cards is totaled and analyzed for trends with previous years of data. The data is then presented in an annual report that is used educate people about the items found on beaches, and to advocate for legislation and ordinances to reduce sources of pollution.
