People Making a Difference (PMD), which organizes one-time, hands-on volunteer projects for individuals, partners with businesses to promote effective community involvement, and trains and assists nonprofit leaders in quality volunteer management, is seeking qualified candidates for its Board of Directors, which governs the organization as well as leads philanthropy efforts. Board nominations are being accepted for three-year terms on a rolling basis.Since PMD began in 1992, it has engaged and learned from more than 9,500 volunteers and 45 for-profit and public business partners. PMD has organized and executed more than 1,290 service projects, helping 143 recipient charities, of which 83% do not have staffing and other resources dedicated to working with volunteers year-round and so need assistance in order to involve volunteers effectively. PMD has built a reputation for providing high quality volunteer experiences that make a real difference to local charities.
Community Service Projects - PMD’s award winning, well planned service projects engage volunteers in meaningful, hands-on work that effectively meets real needs and educates volunteers about the context of their work. Participants consistently feel energized and motivated from making a difference as PMD volunteers. PMD also trains and supervises a corps of experienced volunteer project managers who lead volunteer groups.
Corporate Community Involvement - PMD partners with businesses of all sizes to identify clear community service goals and objectives and then to develop appropriate employee volunteer opportunities. PMD’s involvement ranges from research and project development to complete planning and full-service execution, such that employers need only recruit participants. PMD offers experience, innovation, and convenience. Recent corporate partners have included
BNY Mellon, Novartis, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Dell EMC.
Assisting Nonprofit Leaders - PMD trains and provides technical assistance to charities in implementing strategic practices in volunteer management, so that other nonprofits will embrace high standards that are the hallmarks of PMD’s successful service program.
PMD board members serve staggered, three-year terms. The Board meets quarterly in the early evenings (usually in Downtown Boston or Randolph) and on the first or second Sunday in November in Randolph for a working meeting.
PMD is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in any of the following areas:
-Special Event. PMD organizes a spring benefit (Tuesday, 5/14/2019), so needs help with sponsorship and ticket sales.
-Organizational and Communications Skills. Schedule and keep written records of all meetings, conference calls, and official board actions between meetings, as well as distribute minutes in a timely fashion via email. (Must be a Massachusetts resident.)
-Resource Development Skills and Contacts. We are particularly seeking an experienced development professional who can introduce and mentor inexperienced board directors in fundraising from individuals (annual appeal) and intimate special events. Ideally includes expertise in corporate and foundation fundraising, special event planning, major donor identification and cultivation, and/or individual solicitations. Connections to potential, (paying) corporate partners and major donors are also helpful.
-Web Site Design. Our aged web site needs a complete makeover so it is optimized for mobile-devices and includes more images and calls to action, as well as information for additional stakeholders. We seek a project lead to coordinate with volunteer (and paid) consultants for content design and then development.
-App Design. Although Tufts JumboCode students have successfully developed PMD’s first app for checking in/out volunteers and providing assignments and other communiques so that volunteers no longer have to wait in line (particularly important when more than 20 volunteers officiate for a large event like a science bowl, conclude at different times, or have their assignments/locations changed at large venues), bugs must be fixed and additional features must be developed. We seek a project lead to coordinate with volunteer (and potentially paid) developers.
-Talent Acquisition. Help identify and recruit new volunteer leaders with shared values and priorities. We seek new members with strong commitments to our mission and active participation in expanding support for our work among our board’s and their networks.
-Leadership Development. Increase and expand board engagement and autonomy.
We strongly recommend that potential board candidates become acquainted with the typical work of PMD by FIRST signing up and participating in a PMD service project as a volunteer. Upcoming PMD volunteer opportunities are listed at http://www.pmd.org/events.phtml one month in advance.
