Are you able to promote awareness of an issue? Can you help create strong and organized fundraising campaigns? Let us know how you can help.

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW CAN KILL YOU!
The gap that exists between cutting edge treatments vs. what most institutions are providing is killing neuroendocrine cancer patients. The Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network, a.k.a. CCAN’s job is to bridge that gap and help NET (neuroendocrine tumor) cancer patients get the care they so desperately need.
MONEY FOR RESEARCH IS SCARCER THAN HEN’S TEETH!
Every year it gets tougher to fund our programs and research even though the need is growing. Current studies suggest that carcinoid and other neuroendocrine tumors are not as rare once thought- but due to the lack of public awareness the disease is low priority when it comes to funding medical research.
WHAT IS NEUROENDOCRINE CANCER?
Neuroendocrine tumors, including carcinoid cancer, are cancers that grow in the hormone producing cells. NET cancer is listed with the National Organization of Rare Disorders.
NET CANCER FACTS
-Average time from initial onset of symptoms to proper diagnosis exceeds five years.
-Over 90% of all Carcinoid/ NET patients are incorrectly diagnosed and treated for the wrong disease. Many patients go untreated for years.
-Majority of specialists are not aware of current diagnostic and treatment options.
-Physicians still believe wrongly that carcinoid tumors are benign and do not metastasize.
-Over 11,000 new patients are diagnosed each year and as many as 125,000 patients are living in the US today- AND the number of diagnoses is increasing by more than 5% annually.
-It doesn’t take a lot to screen for NETs. There are a few simple blood and urine tests to aid with the diagnosis.
SO WHO IS CCAN AND WHAT DO WE DO?
Great Non-Profits rated us a Top Non-Profit in 2012 and again 2013! http://greatnonprofits.org/organizations/view/carcinoid-cancer-awareness-network-inc

Our Mission is to intensify awareness of NET Cancer.
CCAN is a 501(c)(3) non-profit incorporated in 2004. For the past 10 years CCAN has provided information and support to NET patients and caregivers through e-mail, our web site, and toll free phone number. Our phone line is open 7 days a week 9 am – 9 pm EST, 365 days a year! The phone line is answered by a patient or a caregiver at all times. It is important for patients to know that the person on the other end of the phone understands first-hand what they’re going through. Literally thousands of free information packets have been mailed. We continue to provide patient support groups with information, awareness items and financial support.
Conferences Keep Patients Updated on New Diagnostics & Treatments.
CCAN has produced over 30 conferences benefiting thousands of patients and their families. We make sure patients can make informed decisions regarding their care. There are the regional conferences like the 7 we produced in 2013 and national patient conferences as well. CCAN provided funding to every National Patient Conference since 2005 and the International Canadian Conference in 2008- and we’re producing the 2014 National NET Patient Conference. CD ROMs and internet replays of many of these events are available on our website and by request.

Reaching Out to Medical Professionals
CCAN exhibits at medical trade shows and medical meetings such as ASCO- ‘06, ‘07, ’08, ’09, ASCO GI ’09 Digestive Disease Week (2007), Interventional Radiology ’08, NANETS ’08 ’09,'10, '11, '12 & local fairs. CCAN has also provided funding and support to the professional society- The North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society since 2006. CCAN has been a NANETS member since 2007 and on the advisory board since 2009.

We Contribute to NET Cancer Research
Recipients include The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, The NY Presbyterian Medical Center, LSU NET lab replacement, LSU NET Research Fund, The Doctors Cancer Foundation, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, the University of Iowa, Vanderbilt University and NANETS. We gave over $90,000 in 2012 and $40,000 in 2013.

Awareness Items Get the Word Out!
Did you ever wonder where those stuffed zebras and zebra bracelets came from? Designed by CCAN, over 350,000 bracelets have been distributed to date. We also distribute other awareness items such as tote bags, rulers, calendars, lapel pins, and car magnets.

10 Year Milestone!
Thanks to our supporters CCAN has been run the patient hotline and conferences for 10 years! Big events keep happening. In 2013 people came to the 10th Annual 'Celebration of Life' Gala on November 9th and the 5th Annual 'Strides for Stripes Zebra Walk' on November 2nd.
Commitment and Staying Power
We won’t stop till there is a cure!
CCAN's board & officers are committed to assisting NET patients & helping find a cure for NET cancer. We focus on quality and keep administrative costs low so most of the funding goes into the programs. Our Goal is Making Life Better for NET Cancer Patients. Together we make a difference!

SAVE THE DATE for the 2014 National NET Cancer Patient Conference being held in Charlotte, North Carolina Sept 18-20th. CCAN and Dr. Eugene Woltering will bring patients and caregivers another amazing conference.
