Mission Statement

Computing for Humanity exists to unlock the power of discovery for those who need it most. Across Canada and beyond, brilliant researchers, students, and citizen scientists are working to solve real-world problems—but too often, they’re held back by one simple thing: lack of access to computing resources. We provide free or low-cost cloud services—CPU, GPU, and secure storage—to those who would otherwise be left behind. Your donation helps power research into climate change, disease, social justice, and more. When you give, you’re not just donating technology—you’re giving someone the chance to make a difference. Let’s build a future where curiosity is never limited by cost.

About This Cause

Computing for Humanity is a Canadian nonprofit on a mission to remove the digital divide in research. We provide free or low-cost access to cloud computing resources—like CPUs, GPUs, virtual machines, and secure storage—to underserved researchers, students, and citizen scientists who lack institutional or financial support. In today’s world, computing power is as essential as books or lab space. Yet thousands of brilliant minds—especially independent researchers, early-career scientists, and graduate students—are blocked from advancing their work due to high costs, outdated infrastructure, or bureaucratic hurdles. We’re here to change that. What we provide: • Secure cloud-based virtual machines for running data-intensive workloads • GPU acceleration for AI, climate modelling, genomics, and more • Affordable and secure storage for academic research and graduate projects • Custom virtual lab environments for remote learning and discovery Sample impacts: • Queen’s University graduate students are facing a severe data loss risk after cloud storage cuts reduced each student's space from 5TB to just 35GB. We’re stepping in to build a 500TB secure storage platform to ensure they don’t lose years of academic work. • A citizen science climate researcher used our infrastructure to simulate glacial melt patterns using open-source geoscience models—something they couldn’t do without GPU access. • We’ve supported long-time distributed computing projects like Rosetta@Home, contributing computing time to protein folding research that accelerates breakthroughs in medicine and disease prevention. • Through Mapping Cancer Markers, we’ve donated processing power to help identify the genetic signatures associated with different types of cancer. This initiative supports earlier and more accurate diagnosis, tailored treatments, and ultimately, better patient outcomes. Your support helps us: • Pay for essential infrastructure like storage arrays and backup systems • Cover costs for cybersecurity, sustainability, and volunteer operations • Expand our reach to more universities, high school STEM programs, and citizen scientists across Canada By donating to Computing for Humanity, you’re not just supporting technology—you’re fuelling education, discovery, and equity. You’re giving someone the tools to change the world. Let’s make sure no great idea is lost just because someone couldn’t afford the compute.
