Mission Statement

Our mission is to help relieve the burdens of poverty and social dislocation within the economically deprived and street population of Oshawa. Originally a drop-in centre, the Back Door Mission has expanded its services during the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently operating Mission United, a low-barrier community hub.

About This Cause

The Back Door Mission, operating Mission United, has partnered with Canadian Mental Health Association, Simcoe St. United Church, Lakeridge Health -Durham Mental Health Services, Pinewood Addiction Services, Ontario Works, Primary Care Outreach Program through Durham Region, Community Development Council Durham, AIDS Committee of Durham Region, John Howard Society of Durham Region, Community Care Durham, Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), Durham Community Health Centre, Victim Services Durham Region, and various local shelters to provide wrap around services for those experiencing poverty or homelessness within the Region. We offer a low-barrier medical clinic, crisis and mental health supports, a daytime safe sleep area, harm reduction, addictions support and management, financial and social assistance, housing supports, peer support and outreach, hot meals 6 days a week, shower services, as well as a food and clothing pantry for our patrons. We bring in occasional services as well such as tax preparation and haircuts. We are a leader in community development through collaboration with the Gap Committee and other local agencies. We strive to not only provide the essentials for individuals in need, but to make a meaningful impact in their lives and future. Our staff work endlessly to engage our patrons in activities that assist them in developing an increased self-worth and confidence.
