History of the Organization Tribal Salvation Society was founded in 2000 in response to the extreme poverty, child trafficking, and human rights violations in Odisha’s KBK districts—Kalahandi, Bolangir, and Koraput. Driven by a passion for justice and empowerment, the organization was officially registered on September 29, 2003, under the Society Registration Act XXI of 1860. Initially focused on improving conditions for tribal and rural communities in Bidabaru village, Kalahandi, the organization has grown significantly over the years. By 2010, it had received FCRA registration, enabling it to attract international support. It also secured 12A and 80G tax exemptions, encouraging philanthropic contributions. Today, the organization continues to address pressing issues such as education, gender equality, human rights, environmental sustainability, and healthcare—impacting thousands of lives through its multi-sectoral, community-driven interventions. Scope of the Organization Tribal Salvation Society operates primarily in Odisha’s KBK districts—Kalahandi, Bolangir, and Koraput—regions afflicted by deep socio-economic distress. The organization also extends its work to Kandhamal, Rayagada, and Gajapati districts, tackling issues facing tribal and rural populations. Challenges in the KBK Region: 1. Child & Early Childhood Development Challenges: • Lack of Infrastructure: Remote tribal areas lack sufficient Anganwadi centres, classrooms, teaching aids, and hygienic child-friendly spaces. • Shortage of Trained Staff: Many early childhood educators lack adequate training, leading to poor quality foundational education. • Low Parental Awareness: Parents in impoverished tribal communities often undervalue pre-school education due to low literacy and economic pressures. • Malnutrition: High rates of child malnutrition and stunting affect cognitive development and school readiness. • Distance to Centres: In hilly or forested areas, children must travel long distances to attend preschool or tuition centers, reducing attendance. 2. Women’s & Widows’ Empowerment Challenges: • Patriarchal Social Norms: Gender-based discrimination limits women's mobility, voice, and access to resources. • Widow Marginalization: Widows often face social exclusion, inheritance denial, and emotional neglect. • Low Literacy and Skill Levels: Many tribal and Dalit women have little or no formal education, limiting their ability to participate in training programs. • Limited Legal Awareness: Women are often unaware of their legal rights related to property, domestic violence, and welfare schemes. • Safety Concerns: Gender-based violence and trafficking risks increase in vulnerable areas without strong legal protection. 3. Youth Development & Leadership Challenges: • Unemployment and Underemployment: Lack of industry presence leads to few job opportunities, especially for skilled youth. • Migration Pressure: Many tribal youth migrate to cities under exploitative conditions due to absence of local livelihoods. • Skill Gaps: Technical and soft skills are limited among tribal youth due to inadequate training infrastructure. • Lack of Role Models and Leadership Exposure: Youth have limited access to mentoring or leadership development opportunities. • Substance Abuse & Social Alienation: Youth in neglected areas may fall into cycles of addiction or conflict with law. ________________________________________ 4. Human Rights, Health & Social Justice Challenges: • Caste and Tribal Discrimination: Structural exclusion of Dalits and Adivasis continues in public services, education, and justice. • Health Service Deficits: Poor road connectivity and lack of PHCs (Primary Health Centres) hinder access to maternal and child health care. • Low Health Awareness: Myths, taboos, and illiteracy obstruct adoption of health services, especially reproductive health. • Legal Illiteracy: Marginalized communities often don’t know their rights under Indian law and have poor access to legal aid. • Language Barriers: Legal and health campaigns often fail to communicate in local tribal dialects, reducing impact. 5. Livelihood, Agriculture & Environmental Action Challenges: • Small & Fragmented Landholdings: Many tribal families practice subsistence farming with little access to irrigation or markets. • Climate Vulnerability: Frequent droughts, erratic rainfall, and deforestation degrade farming livelihoods. • Lack of Technical Support: Tribal farmers often lack training in modern farming or eco-sustainable practices. • Debt Traps & Exploitation: High dependency on informal moneylenders due to lack of financial inclusion. • Resource Depletion: Overexploitation of forest and water resources leads to ecological degradation, impacting tribal communities' survival. Activities: Child & Early Childhood Development • Early Childhood Education: Provision of quality pre-school and foundational learning for tribal, Dalit, and minority children to ensure equitable access to education. • Child Day Care & Free Tuition Centres: Daycare support and academic help for marginalized children to reduce education barriers. Women's & Widows' Empowerment • Women’s Development Ministry: Offers capacity-building programs, skill training, legal literacy, and advocacy focused on rights, justice, and socio-economic support for tribal and minority women. • Widows’ Support: Tailored care, emotional support, and livelihood aid aiming to uplift widows and enable their social inclusion. Youth Development & Leadership Skill-based training in IT, trades, and entrepreneurship to boost youth employability. Leadership workshops build public speaking, advocacy, and conflict-resolution skills. Rural sports programs promote inclusion, teamwork, and social harmony. Human Rights, Health & Social Justice • Constitutional & Human Rights Education: Workshops and campaigns to promote rights awareness (tribal, Dalit, minority), interfaith harmony, legal aid, and community peace-building. Livelihood, Agriculture & Environmental Action Supports sustainable farming and eco-friendly income sources for tribal families. Promotes climate resilience through afforestation, clean energy, and biodiversity conservation initiatives.
