About This Cause

Swedish Sudanese Association (SSA) has been active in supporting vital necessities and development in Sudan Since 1981. Especially we have been supportive in the fields of health, environmental development, education and support of youth. We have at several occasions since 1981 gathered and sent or supported medical equipment, medicin like insulin, protection equipment for health personal during Covid-19, support to victims of violence 2019, building of a women clinic Bara hospital etc. As you most probably have heard Sudan is in an catastrophic state since 20230415 when fighting started between the Sudanese Army and the militia RSF in Khartoum and other places around Sudan. Many people are killed, Vast housing areas destroyed, Ordinary life is hindered and the health services needs all possible support it can get. Fighting is still going on in parts of Khartoum, Darfur and in several other places and regions in Sudan. Since the end of April we are, together with 14 other Sudan related associations, gathering means for local health clinics in Khartoum, and later on to other places in Sudan. Still the health clinics are kept open with courageous personal that want to contribute with the help they can but they are working under very tough conditions and have a deficit of most vital means. That these clinics are kept is vital and in many cases life saving for many people in affected areas, especially as the hospitals are in a terrible state and sometimes even under direct attack from military elements. Within the campaign "Save Lives in Sudan" we have from 20230425 up to 20230704 gathered 275 816 swedish crowns (about 27 000 USdollars). The humanitarian aid is flexible due to what is needed and can be expanded to other fields according to priorities and possibilities to reach the affected people. We have good contacts with doctor associations and individual doctors in Sudan and Sudanese doctors in Sweden and other countries. We have an advisary "medical committee" to follow up contacts and give us advice before sending support to Sudan via our associations contacts. The first sending has been made to a hardly affected but still functioning and struggling health clinic in Omdurman. And more sendings are soon to come. The most urgent need at the moment seems to be fuel and electricity, both for transport and for electricity to the health clinics and possibility to keep vital medicin in refrigerators that needs to be kept cold not to be destroyed. Please help us to Save Lives by transferring your contributions to: SSF Bankgiro: 5295-7594 or Swish: 123-3794732. Write "Save Lives" or "Rädda Liv" in the message field. We are so thankful for every contribution to our campaign "Save Lives in Sudan" or "Rädda Liv i Sudan" . We will update you with information along the way by facebook at: /www.facebook.com/SSAorg/,and other media and if you have further questions we are very happy to answer them. SSF has a long history both of urgent fundings and long term support to people in Sudan, everything that is donated goes directly to what it is aimed for and we are very cautious to follow up that he help reaches the people in need. OTHER ACTIVITIES AND FUNDING SSA is also active promoting cultural exchange and Sudanese culture in Sweden and Sudan by arranging activities in Sweden and spreading information. We have been arranging several events with artists, sudanese food and art etc. - often in cooperation with other Sudan affiliatied organisation. In Sudan the association has since 2003 a "Sweden House" (a tree cottage built by the Swedish Sudanese Association) in the International Park where usually, during peaceful times, activities are held every week with cultural and social gatherings, music, arts exhibitions, lectures, networking, youth projects planning and swedish courses and celebration of swedish festivities. It is our sister association Sudanese Swedish Friendship Association that is taken care of the house and all activities. We are also since 2008 supporting the orphanage of Dar el Fitiyan in Khartoum, where boys with often severe disabilities live. Outside Bara in North Kordufan SSF had a village project 1985-1997 including 6 villages with water from covered wells driven by solar energy pump systems, planting of trees and vegetables and village committees with men and women deciding about the projects and distribution of income. Since then we have been networking to get support for the village devolopment by visits to the sites every year. Between the three villages of Foja, Shiq el Nome and Mashqa that didn´t have a school for the children, Knalle school was built and inaugurated 1993 - about 7-8 km outside Bara. It was designed by our representative in Khartoum Osman El Kheir that has been with SSA since then. The Knalle school has functioned as a basic school for girls and boys since then. In the beginning the school was aimed to be a bigger education centre equipped with water from a covered well with solar pumps system, a bio gas system, a garden with trees and vegetables, class rooms, dormitories, a multi purpose hall, diner with kitchen, work shops, health clinic, 4 houses for teachers and access to energy from solar panels. The school should teach effective ecologically friendly cultivation methods and be a centre even for courses and seminars for older youngsters and adults in cooperation with the University of Kordufan. However, during the years, the school has turned to a more ordinary basic school, many of the trees have died, several buildings not used are severely affected by sand drift and lack of maintenance and the number of children going to the school has diminished as some villages have built new schools in their villages (which of course is very positive) and the new educational system with basic compulsary school grade 1-6 instead of grade 1-8 as before. And then intermediate schools that are not compulsary grade 7-9 and not yet developed. But since 2003 SSF gathers money for a scholarship program for children educated at the Knalle School and during the past 20 years more than 30 pupils have taken exams from the university and about 60 pupils from the secondary school with support from the SSA. There are also incentives for the pupils at Knalle School (2 girls and 2 boys in each class) to motivate for further studies. This is something we are very proud of and continues to gather money for. The last years we have also started up a democracy project in the Knalle school promoting a mutual school committee between children and teachers and that they work together with projects to improve the school. We have also during the last years renewed the solar pump system and gathered money for a 6 acres big fenced in nutritional garden with trees and vegetables that in the future partly should be taken care of by contracted farmers and partly by children and teachers together learning about ecologically friendly cultivation methods. Fresh vegetables and fruits can help to improve the nutritional situation at the school and the surplus can be used to keep and improve the garden and, in the future, maybe even give extra money for other urgent needs at the school. Now their are plans, together with the school authorities and the University of Kordufan, to gradually transfer the school in to an intermediate school for children from many villages using all the buildings in the area and develop the nutritional garden, biogas systems, buildings equipped with electricity and internet etc. At the present the school is closed due to the war and this is of course a long time planning. SSF has 20230501 started to collect money for restauration and equipping of the two functioning teachers houses and the multi purpose hall. This is vital to make the teachers stay and engage actively together with the children. As soon as the acute situation in Sudan has improved we will promote this funding more actively. Our dream is to make The Knalle school a green example again for education of youngsters and adults at a local educational centre, the only one of its kind in the region outside Bara. To promote education, school democracy and responsibility for the development of oneself and the communities. An active place for creativity and for trying inventions. A green oasis in the dry surroundings. SSA was one of the first pioneers in Sudan using solar energy for water pumps and with your help our ambition is to be such a pioneer again.
