About This Cause

The Swedish Sudanese Association (SSA), founded informally in 1968 and officially constituted as a non-profit, non-governmental organization in February 1982 (officially registered as a Swedish non-profit organisation in 1987-05-15), has been a vital bridge between Sweden and Sudan for over five decades. Initially established as a friendship, cultural, and social platform, SSA aimed to promote Sudanese culture in Sweden while creating a supportive network for Sudanese individuals and Swedish friends of Sudan. These objectives are still a vital part of SSA’s activities, but over time, the association expanded its mission to include impactful development, educational and humanitarian projects, cementing its role as a key player in fostering intercultural dialogue and delivering aid to communities in need. One of SSA’s most notable early initiatives was the Sudan Villages Project (1985-1997), where SSA pioneered the use of solar pump systems to retain water for planting trees and vegetables. The project also included the construction of Knalle School in the outskirts of Bara, North Kordofan, providing quality education for girls and boys in underserved communities. This effort highlighted SSA’s commitment to education and rural development. SSA also built and owns the Sweden House in the International Park of Khartoum. Established in cooperation with the Sudanese Swedish Friendship Association, the house has become a prominent cultural hub for promoting Swedish-Sudanese ties and fostering intercultural exchange. The Sweden House and its activities are managed by SSA’s sister organization in Sudan, the Sudanese Swedish Friendship Association. Beyond education support, SSA supported the Dar Al-Fityan Orphanage, a project led by its youth committee, which provided essential resources for many years. Recently, SSA revisited Knalleskolan and the nearby village of Awaija, installing solar power systems to ensure access to clean drinking water and irrigation, further demonstrating SSA’s focus on sustainability and long-term community impact. Ever since 1980 and onwards up to now, SSA actively engaged in various development and humanitarian efforts, including responding to natural disasters and conflicts in Sudan. The association raised funds to provide medical aid, food, and other essential resources during crises such as droughts, floods, and the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2023, the outbreak of war in Sudan triggered an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Hospitals and health centers faced immense challenges, including power outages, fuel shortages, and damaged infrastructure. In response, SSA launched the “Save Lives in Sudan” campaign, bringing together Sudanese and Swedish associations with a shared commitment to addressing the urgent needs of hospitals, health centers, and field clinics during the war, enabling them to treat and save the lives of the Sudanese people. The "Save Lives in Sudan" project is dedicated to supporting health facilities by providing sustainable energy solutions, primarily through solar power installations in critical hospital and clinic departments. Managed in collaboration with multiple partner organizations, this initiative has helped hospitals and health centers remain operational, ensuring that life-saving medical care continues despite ongoing challenges. Our support extends to public hospitals, health centers, and field clinics across central, western, eastern, southern, and northern Sudan, as well as in refugee camps field clinics along the Sudanese border. By addressing urgent energy needs, the campaign enhances the resilience of healthcare facilities serving vulnerable communities. While significant progress has been made, the need remains immense—many hospitals and clinics are still in desperate need of reliable power solutions. SSA and its partners are actively fundraising to expand the campaign’s reach and impact. The association has engaged with global institutions such as UNHCR, UNICEF, and WFP, and is working alongside the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA), Fal für Humanitäre Hilfe und Entwic (FAL) and other NGOs in Sudan, Europe and globally to address urgent humanitarian needs. The Swedish Sudanese Association remains a beacon of hope and solidarity, driven by a dedicated network of Swedish and Sudanese members, as well as friends and partners worldwide. From its early cultural and educational projects to its current humanitarian campaigns, SSA is steadfast in its mission to support the Sudanese people and strengthen Swedish-Sudanese bonds. We invite individuals and organizations to join us in making a difference.
