About This Cause

Have A Gay Day, Inc. is a nonprofit based in Dayton, Ohio, USA, and is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 charity. The story of Have A Gay Day starts on February 25, 2012. Our founder, Michael Knote, had created a memorial page for Jamey Rodemeyer, a teenager whose life was lost to suicide at 14 after experiencing homophobic bullying. Upon noticing that many people were sharing bullying and suicide prevention content to gain likes and shares off of such tragic events, Michael created the "Have A Gay Day" Facebook page to actually help the community. Have A Gay Day., Inc. was later registered with the Ohio Secretary of State in 2013, and we were approved for a tax exemption as a charity under IRC 501(c)3 by the IRS in 2014. We are also registered as a charity with the Ohio Attorney General. In 2024, we finally received our registration certificate from the US Patent and Trademark Office for our registered trademark of "Have A Gay Day." Currently, Have A Gay Day, Inc. operates an LGBTQ+ community space in Dayton, Ohio. Within this community space, we operate the only Montgomery County, Ohio food pantry open on Sundays, where we distribute food to over 200 families every week. We also own laundry facilities at our community space that are free to the community to use. Additionally, our community space hosts many free events throughout the year, and we often allow other charities to use our space to host their own events, at no charge. We have hosted free haircut events, vet care clinics, HIV testing, DND game nights, and so much more. We currently have two emergency fund programs which provide a limited amount of financial support to individuals in need. Our Ada Gaden Project provides emergency financial assistance to Ohio residents in need of food, shelter, or transportation. We also have a second emergency funding program available only to our volunteers. Outside of our local community, our Facebook page has grown to over 1.6M followers. Every year, using funds raised on Facebook, we put up billboards showing support for the LGBTQ+ community in many states across the US, many showing messages of support for trans youth. "Have A Gay Day" was a play on words and was created in the hopes of providing a safe space online to those that needed it. This thought lives on today as Have A Gay Day, Inc. became a non-profit charity organization through our mission and the work that we do in the community.
