Mission Statement
The OAH is the foremost professional organization for American history. As a diverse and dynamic community of historians, the OAH cultivates excellent scholarship, fosters innovative teaching, and advocates for the crucial importance of history and historical thinking in American life. History is essential for knowing and understanding the world. We stand for the ethical and accurate use of history in public life. The work of history can only be achieved with protections for academic freedom and contributions of all historians regardless of career path or status. We support original, vetted, and rigorous scholarship, including new and emerging subfields that are enriching the discipline and those adopting interdisciplinary methods. Respect, collegiality, diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion are our core values.
About This Cause
Founded in 1907, the Organization of American Historians (OAH) is the largest organization dedicated to the teaching and study of American history, and publishes the Journal of American History, a journal of record in the field. The OAH represents nearly 5,500 member historians, who are college and university professors, pre-collegiate teachers, archivists, museum curators, public historians, students, and professional historians working in a variety of institutional settings including national parks and historical societies. OAH historians are uniquely equipped to provide insight to the present through their deep and nuanced understanding of the past, and the OAH encourages wide discussions of historical questions with broad public audiences.
