Mission Statement

The mission of Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc. is to break the cycle of family violence and to strengthen families by providing the necessary tools for self-sufficiency through the delivery of emergency shelter, housing, education, effective parenting, legal services and early intervention with adults, children, youth, the elderly and with those who choose to abuse.

About This Cause

Domestic and family violence are complex issues which have far-reaching repercussions across the lives of victims, their friends and families, and the community at large. Consequently, they are best addressed through a comprehensive approach. For this reason, FVPS, in its 47-year history, has designed a multifaceted system of support designed to meet survivors where they are in their journey, from crisis intervention to programs designed to facilitate longer-term safety and stability. The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter (BWCS) is a 160-bed emergency shelter and supportive services campus offering on-site access to counseling, case management, crisis assistance, civil legal services, adult education, designated children’s services, an afterschool program, parenting groups, a pet kennel, transitional housing, CPS liaison programming, and primary medical and dental care. The organization’s 24-hour crisis hotline is operated out of the shelter, and the number is widely published through both internal and external sources. Survivors not in active crisis but still needing help can benefit from transitional housing or rapid rehousing rental assistance programs—living rent-free with continuing support and case management. Nonresidential services located at FVPS’s Broadway location include counseling, civil legal assistance, CPS liaison programming, and parenting and family classes. FVPS also operates a Court and Military Liaison program, which assists court-and-military-involved victims with advocacy and seamless referral to all agency programs. (Specialized legal services are also provided to the military- involved population.) The Community Based Counseling program, housed at Haven for Hope, serves the mental health needs of those experiencing homelessness. FVPS’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) empowers teens to directly combat teen dating violence. Finally, in recognition of the reality that intervention with perpetrators is a key component to decreasing violence – so long as there are perpetrators, there will always be á Prevention Programs (BIPP) in the County, along with a perpetrator focused parenting program (Once a Child).
