MOVIMIENTO DE ARTE Y CULTURA LATINO AMERICANA DE SAN JOSE INCORPORATED

San Jose, California, 95113-2806 United States

Mission Statement

MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana is an energizing contemporary arts space where Latino artists create and showcase new work in the visual, literary and performance arts to help define, interpret and transform society. MACLA was founded in 1989 as a movement for cultural change dedicated to challenging ethnic and cultural stereotypes while promoting critical thinking, civic dialogue and a stake in the local arts scene in keeping with the vital contributions of the Latino community.

About This Cause

MACLA produces 50 programs each year in four core program tracts: visual arts; performance and literary arts; youth arts education; and community development through the arts. Unlike arts organizations rooted in the Latino/Chicano experience that seek to preserve traditional art forms, MACLA focuses on contemporary works and is actively engaged with a variety of communities, cultures and aesthetic approaches. As a hybrid urban arts space, MACLA strives to serve as a community catalyst for alternative, underrepresented cultural expression.
