MOVIMIENTO DE ARTE Y CULTURA LATINO AMERICANA DE SAN JOSE INCORPORATED

San Jose, California, 95113-2806 United States

Mission Statement

MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana is an inclusive contemporary arts space grounded in the Chicano/Latino experience that incubates new visual, literary, and performance art in order to engage people in civic dialogue and community transformation. MACLA was founded in 1989 as a movement for cultural change dedicated to challenging ethnic and cultural stereotypes while promoting critical thinking, civic dialogue and a stake in the local arts scene in keeping with the vital contributions of the Latino community.

About This Cause

MACLA produces 50 programs each year in three core program tracts: visual arts, performance and literary arts, and youth arts education. Unlike arts organizations rooted in the Latino/Chicano experience that seek to preserve traditional art forms, MACLA focuses on contemporary works and is actively engaged with a variety of communities, cultures, and aesthetic approaches. As a hybrid urban arts space, MACLA strives to serve as a community catalyst for alternative, underrepresented cultural expression.
